Ocean Alexander 390 - any inside knowledge?

Having spent several decades in sailing boats, I'm profoundly ignorant about the types of motor boats around.

We're looking to buy something bigger than our current 34 footer.

Can anyone tell me something about the Ocean Alexander 390?

There's seems to be a huge range of asking prices, and I've never heard of them: any views?

Long established brand with its own afficionadoes. Byron is your man, he owned one iirc for several years, before his princess435, a while ago (Thames forum)
 
Hi NealB. The Ocean Alexander was one of a number of Taiwanese built boats which appeared in Europe in the 1980's. In fact, I very nearly bought one. Like most Taiwanese boats, they offer a lot of space for the money and a traditional teak built interior which I guess might appeal to ex yotties! But they are heavy boats and most have a form of hard chine semi displacement hull which means that they're going to use more fuel at, say, 15-20kts than the well known British planing hulled boats of the same era. Also, there are stories about earlier Taiwanese boats suffering from osmosis so a full hull survey is essential. Also, at this age, a full engine survey would be well worth having
If you are interested in Ocean Alexander, you might take a look at similar Taiwanese offerings from the likes of Trader, President and Hershine. Grand Banks are well respected but they'll be more expensive. Also take a look at the Hatteras 40DC. Similar style but made in the USA and built like the proverbial s*** house
 
Byrons previous boat to his Princess 435 was a Broom Ocean 37. Both boats called Ocean Eagle. The name might have caused the confusion?
 
Ah, sorry, yes. My confusion is more subliminal than that though: yes he had the boats Ocean Eagle but his business is called Alexander. So I put the two together and came up with a boat he never owned. Jeeze, I'm going senile. Thanks for bringing it to my attention though :-)

It's having it while talking about Airex core and grp layup that is worth a thought.....

Naah! Never owned one but did several deliveries of the same boat in about 1980. She was one of the first of the breed in the UK. Her name was "Charlie Girl".
Problem is I never ever had her in any kind of weather. It was always a dead flat calm. From my memories she was quite a docile craft for getting alongside etc. but somewhat under powered.
