Obs v's ply

Hello all,

So I've been looking at my cabin rebuild as its rotten,

has anybody had any experience with sterling obs boards are they acceptable to be used for my cabin?

I will be priming and painting my cabin once built.

would OBS be a acceptable substitute to the old and trusted marine ply.

Thanks Crew :)

Seahall

sterling bd has no place on a boat imho

OBS ??
Wondered what you meant.... OSB ....Oriented Strand Board !

There is I notice a marine grade for use in humid conditions

Personally would use ... have used . WBP ( weather and boil proof) exterior grade ply. Even my tender is made of WBP and thats seen 30 + years of service

Certainly no need for expensive Marine ply but be wary of poor quality WBP. You should be able to get it teak ( and other decorative hardwood) faced if you want.

FWIW SR was lined out with Veneered Chipboard when I bought her. That's daft I thought, but I leave it 'til it swells & splits before replacing it as I have too much to spend on already.

Anyway, over 25 years on & the board is still in first class condition! SR is a pretty dry boat tho & I keep her well ventilated in the winter.

Agree that there's no need to use expensive marine ply for the OP's project. However, he did say that his existing ply has rotted out, so presumably the boat is not immune to a spot of damp. Good exterior grade WBP will be fine. All edges should be sealed with epoxy (which you'd do for marine ply, anyway).

Did the OP mean OSB (orientated strand board) rather than OBS? Most OSB is not durable.

OSB is mainly used as sheathing in walls, flooring, and roof decking. OSB also sees some use in furniture production as well. It is not recommended for external use or where it can get damp or wet. Even conditioned OSB will swell with damp over time.

you could always try exterior grade birch ply........ probably better than most of the so called 'marine' plys!!
