Hey guys,

I have these really lovely pair of old wooden oars, I have nearly stripped off the old varnish ready to re varnish, however there are black stains on the wood, it looks like oil has got onto the somehow, does anyone have any idea on how to get rid of these blackstains? I can upload a pic if that'd help anyone?

Many thanks

It could be water, indicative of rot, as I discovered on a similar pair.

aha your funny.
If it is rot (more likely than anything else) you can reduce the surface discolouration by using oxalic acid - that doesn't mean that the oars are fit for purpose! The rot may have gone far enough to fatally weaken them.

If you can sand off the black patches fairly easily, you'll not only improve them cosmetically, but you'll prove they're still usable.
The latter is the course I'd suggest - more work but greater improvement
