I have a nylon stuffing box in my 8.8 m ketch. I have seen one report in this forum about one of these fracturing and a friend has recently reported a similar failure in his boat (he may have over-tightened it). The stuffing box in my boat is about 35 years old, was last repacked 10 years ago, and last adjusted about 5 years ago. It is working well, dripping slowly (a couple of drops a minute) when the shaft turns, but not when idle and it does not over-heat. Should I worry? What is the communal experience on failures?.
