NV Charts gps question

I recently bought the excellent NV “atlas” of charts for the East Coast area and included in the package is an electronic version.

I’ve downloaded it to my I pad and all seems well...

But..

As soon as I take the iPad out of wi-fi range the gps signal is lost and the little image of my Boat and it’s position disappears.

So I’m guessing that I need wi-fi in order to use this as a plotter? If so it’s not much good when I’m poodling up the Blackwater with no internet connection.

I’m pretty sure the iPad has gps built in.

Any thoughts please.

I know that this probably isn’t the right forum for this but I know that I will get more sensible suggestions from the East Coast group rather than the wider community. :0)

Cheers,

Richard

If the iPad does not have a SIM card slot, it won't have built in GPS. Doesn't need a card in the slot, but the slot has to be there.

Bit of a Luddite I’m afraid, I don’t have a smart phone just a bog standard one I bought from ALDI many years ago.

I did have an iPhone but it fell in the Blackwater....... just before I did !

From the sound of it you're on the tech route already so wouldn't it make more sense to invest in an inexpensive android or some such? Easy access to weather info etc too.
