Numeral one code flag - why?

Class flag, they are racing. (Or on their way to race)

Normally the IRC fleet is divided into classes by rating, we are rarely in class 1, normally in 2 or 3 depending on the event.

Reminds me .... Solent few years ago ...

Boat with numeral pendant ... shouts "I'm RACING .... " points at pendant ...

I shout back "COLREGS - A*******E !!"

Normally if searoom - I will gladly give way even if Colregs say otherwise - boldly and obviously of course .... but this was where I had no room and had to hold course as per Colregs.

Kind of interested to know why a few yachts I've seen recently fly a numeral one code flag from the back stay.. ??

Depends on where you're sailing.
In my experience it's mostly Dutch and German boats who fly pennant 1 to indicate they are singlehanded.

Our club use the numeral code flag (the triangular one) to indicate course selected for the day. So only flown from race control. We use the Naval numeral flag (square one) on each boat to indicate the division we race in. ol'will
