Numbers in Jubilee Pageant

I know a lot of people on here were disappointed by not being allowed into the Queens Jubilee Pageant. While our boat was accepted I have to say that the organisers have created a real mess with numbers allowed on board. From our club (yes one of the Blue Blazer clubs), many of our members were given ridiculous restrictions on numbers.

Health and safety is one thing but honestly some of the decisions seem to have been taken with a random number generator. I am sure that the Royal Barge or the Dunkirk Ships are not limited in how many they can take.

Anyone else on here affected?

I have been given no restrictions or even had any correspondence regarding possible restrictions. How many were you trying to get on board, and what sort of boat?

We wanted 10 on a large motorboat that can easily take 14. Got 6. I wouldn't mind but I know of several much smaller boats that have no restriction other than the 14 PLA limit. That is what is annoying - rules applied randomly.

There is a limit of 16 for the man powered fleet which is quite sensible as the risk increases significantly as the numbers go up.

Commercially you'd need serious extra safety kit for those kind of numbers so I can support it unless your in something substantial with additional safety kit comparable with commercial operations.

Don't forget that if that one boat with greater numbers than that and you get in to difficulty then you're tying up two safety boats to deal with people, not to mention dealing with the boat itself.

14 passengers and 2 crew actually.

If more crew then you have less passenger quota.

Chris

From the invitation: Total number of persons permitted aboard are 14 or less, which includes crew members. Trust me this is an issue with which I am very familiar.

Well you had better go on your invitation correspondence as my info is based on the man powered fleet.

Always thought the limit was 12 passengers + 2 crew for any boat anywhere, surely any sensible skipper of a small boat on the tideway wouldn't want more than that on board anyway.

Having organized my crew, invited our passengers and almost completed the security forms for everybody, I received at 2013 on Maundy Thursday evening (ie after close of business before a four-day holiday) , Issue Six of Pageant News telling me of a limit one fewer than I had planned. Pageant News claimed that this 'new' maximum number of permitted people was shown in my original invitation but that invitation stated fourteen, but the 'new limit' is less than half that. Everybody is naturally excited about attending; am I now supposed to tell them to leave one child behind?

The OP said: "many of our members were given ridiculous restrictions on numbers". I hope that everybody similarly affected contacts the organizers as a matter of urgency, copied to MS.

You must have a pretty big boat to want to take more than 14 people and not be concerned that there are sufficient capable adults aboard to make sure that any children and elderly passengers receive immediate help in the water if any problems occur,am assuming it is some sort of tug or barge ?

Presumably "Pageant News" is only being sent to participants? Is it a restricted document or can you share it with us?
I, for one, would certainly be interested to learn more about the event and its preparations.

You suggest that people copy any representations they may make to MS? It would be disingenious of me to suggest many of us do not know who you refer to, but what reason do you have to believe this may have any influence on the situation?

I genuinely hope it will be a great day and thoroughly enjoyed by all who take part. However, the more I hear, the more convinced I am that my personal decision to be content with watching on TV was good for my sanity !

I do not know how to share it with you, and doubtless the army (navy?) of jobsworths who are ruining this supposedly enjoyable activity would have something to say if I did. They have a Facebook page and a website, and can presumably be contacted via those. I believe you know who "MS" is; either way those involved in this latest debacle will probably know who he is, and will appreciate that as a matter of courtesy if nothing else he should be copied in.

As to staying at home and watching it on the TV, I am beginning to think you made a wise choice; I might now do the same.

In response to another posting, I never proposed to carry anything like fourteen people; that was the maximum number allocated to me in the original invitation, which says something about the competence of the organizers. I have invited people up to a limit far less than this, but the organizers have set a limit one fewer than my limit. Now that people have been invited, are looking forward to it, and have turned down other plans for that day, I am not prepared at this late stage to ask someone to stand down.

No idea on their situation but with many Little Ships numbers have been imposed below the standard 14 restriction. Many are limited to 4, 6 or 8.

The organizers are now amenable to requests for changes to boat capacities but need to have 'appeals' asap. New capacities will be issued by them on Friday at the latest.
