Lenseman,

any info' about Portland Bill area is gratefully received; the place has put the willies up me since I was a boy, the UK's version of Cape Horn and what with the tides and lobster pots, best avoided by the 5 miles off method !

WIMP!!! Portland Bill is easy especially in a storm with wind on tide, take a look here and you will see. :D

The trouble with that video is that it doesn't show the really calm inshore passage that's just out of sight under the lighthouse.... ;)

Actually I have been round Portland many times and 9 times out of 10 have taken the inshore passage - very very close to the rocks. Not in those conditions though...

Wimp, that's me then !

Didn't they film ' The Cruel Sea ' there as they coulldn't find anywhere else rough enough to pitch a corvette / frigate halfway out of the water ?!

John Morris, watch out for the lobster pots towed under by the tide in the inshore passage !
