Did you see that article in this month's YM. The one about COMPULSORY log keeping?

Well I (thirty years before the mast) will state publically HERE AND NOW that I WILL NOT keep a log when undertaking the milk run from Hamble to Yarmouth in clear weather which I have undertaken nearly every weekend in three for the last 27 years. It's BLOODY STUPID! Beaurocracy gone mad! Doesn't mean I won't continue to keep one on extended cruises though.

Now who is going to call me irresponsible?
Some sactimonious twit who runs his boat like a Scout troop no doubt!

I agree with you on it's pointlessness - however, this season I'm actually going to make an effort to keep more entries even on the short routine trips for one simple reason.

In mid winter when it's pitch balck at 4 pm, cold and wet, if I have a moment I'll flick through the log book with a nice big glass of red of an evening and it takes me back to being on the boat in the summer.

But yeah, being forced to do ? pah!

Totally mad

I agree but it's even worse than you think. The article also said that it's going to be administered leniently as it's meant to catch a certain type of sailor . Excuse me . Did I read that right ? If that's the case what is the point of the legislation at all ? Who's going to police it ? Am I going to get stopped and asked if I've done a passage plan sailing from Chichester to Seaview for an afternoon picnic ? It's bureaucracy gone bonkers and it'll be interesting , to say the least , to see the results of the legislation in the months to come.

Yes of course! you will have to submit your log along with the boats MOT (which will include up to date flares) and insurance cert. When you pay for your new annual 'Sea Fund Licence' which will be based on the number of sea mile you do a year plus boat length and value, and of course this will all be subject to VAT and income tax. All payable to your new 'devolved' region. It makes complete sense!

I believe

think I read it in my German pilot book, that it's already a legal requirement in for example Germany. I certainly had my log book thoroughly inspected by German customs/immigration when stopped in the middle of nowhere (Schleswig Holstein, actually).

Someone also mentioned (was it Bill Cooper?) that it has already been a legal requirement in the UK for some time for boats that are Part I registered (as mine is). I must admit I do not always fill in my logbook, but the requirement does not make me shiver is my boots. If and when I start smuggling or gun-running, I will make sure that I fill in my log book assiduously.

I haven't seen the article yet, but it may not be such a big change from the status quo.

I seem to remember that it is still illegal in Scotland to walk a dog on a Sunday. Can any Scottish lawyers confirm?

Capital Offence

The are still a few anachronisms about eg Capital punishent is still applicable for treason but ...treason also is ,quite apart from the obvious,

Arson in the Royal Dockyards
Shagging the sovereign's consort

So watch out girls if you're caught giving HRH one in Portsmouth at a BBQ it could have severe consequences.

Re: Other SOLAS requirements

I think SOLAS means Stupid and Outrageous Laws passed by A******S.

The regulations also include a requirement to have a radar reflector if practicable. I do not know who decides when it is practical, and I understand the regs do not state that it has to be mounted, merely that you have to have one. Plenty of room for misunderstanding then.

There are also regs about safety equipment and briefings.

The real question is why has there not been a major campaign to tell us about the new regs, and perhaps more importantly who is to police them.

Its probably the magistrate in Weymouth who fined the guy for hitting the breakwater and whose flares were out of date

Re: don\'t forget wind tax...

Quite. We'll pay a fortune up here. But there should be a clause defining "useable winds". Perhaps we can rely on amending legislation from the House of Lords or different wind rates determined by Regional Assemblies.

Not an April Fool?

That was my first thought ... which month are we in? If published in April instead of the composite plastic/wood joke it would have been hard to tell which was the more absurd.

Fair enough, it has long been a criminal offence to sail in the USA without in date flares of the right types, with the proper number of "throwable devices" etc., but then the USA has thousands of rules at every corner. Hell, doggy style is illegal in many states (and in West Virginia it's STILL illegal to allow a hen to lay eggs on a Sunday).

But log keeping? Why? What consitutes a proper log on a sailboat ... every hour? every course change? every sail change? It would be impractical on a short hop into the channel for a 20-30 mile "fun run".

Doubtless, though, such laws will be passed - along with licensing and all the rest. What chance for sailors in 2100AD?

Re:to all raggies

It is about time you windbags started contributing to the national purse. As we stinkies steer in straigtht lines and already pay loads in fuel tax we will of corse be exempt.IMHO

Exercise is bunk.If you are healthy, you do not need it;if you are sick you should not take it.

Re: don\'t forget wind tax...

On the tax issue, bikes are classed as enviromentilly friendly as the do not use fossel fuel. To this end millions have been spent making bike tracks, yet they have no insurance, pay no road tax, and most of them spend more time on the back of a car obstructing the cars number plate and rear lights, than being peddled.
Now yachts use the wind for propulsion, most use wind or solar for generating electricity. only using fossel fuel for the absolute minimum time, probably less than most bikes. Sailing also provides excersice, as we are told is the great benifit of bikes.

Why do they not give yachts the same funds as bikes, we could have free mooring, more slips, better dredging, and all regulations relating to them scraped.

What happened to equality ??????

There,s equality & there's the softest target for ripping off for tax revenue.

The tax on car fuel proves that.

Re: Testing the water

WEll as it is right now is the best you going to get !!!, because some #### has dicided to musle in, even more on our leasure time .
Once begun this will get worse . I can well imagine light duties being levied next along with channel fees every time you go across the channel or run close to a port you will have to pay a fee so they can watch you on radar, cant you just see the potential money spinner .

Re:to all raggies

If your stinkie is diesel, as many are, you don't pay fuel tax on the diesel either. And if you want to go round on a floating bomb and pay loads of tax on petrol, you are are stupid as us flaggies who think we save lots of money on fuel and then spend more than we might have saved on bits of canvas and bits of string,

Re: electronic answer

> COMPULSORY log keeping?

If this rule is enforced frequently then I expect the GPS manufacturers will implement an auto log function to meet the requirements of a visiting official.
