....anyone going anywhere exciting?

We are off to Cowes this weekend for what feels like the first real trip this year!

Can't wait! :D

so...tell me why the met office is talking about force 4 and 5 for the next 48 hours for the south coast yet wind guru struggles to get a 3 on the chart and mostly is offering 1 and 2 into the weekend

yeah yeah i know i shouldn't believe all these web forecasts but is it just me who thinks the met office add and extra Bft scale to every forecast (especially in the summer months) to cover their ass

i got a window, think i might look out of it and take my chances this weekend...guess i better brace myself for a fuel up after the weekend!!

I don't know, I am going with WindGuru too!

We are just bimbling round from Torbay prob to the Dart this weekend before setting off longer voyages in mid July. Interesting comments on the WFcs - I use SWIS and find this quite good. But also look at WindGuru and Met office too. Bl00dy weather at the moment...how unsettled????

Hi Rip, am in Brixham at the weekend and was thinking of heading up the Dart for an overnighter, if you see us (Serenity) give is a wave.
Re SWIS, 2 weekends ago they were predicting 6 to 8 but barely went above 3!

Couldn't agree more. You can compare the wind strengths in the Met Office general forecast to the Shipping/ Coastal and it is nearly always +1 beaufort, particularly on lower end of scale

I agree it always appears the MET takes a pessimistic view, I have a theory that the only success test that they apply to themselves is "was their prediction of strong winds accurate?" they do not measure how often they predicted strong winds and there was nothing of the kind so it is in their interests to always predict strong winds and then by their success test they are 100% correct. The big problem with this is that I for one and many others I believe are bigging to get fed up of them crying wolf all the time.

I need to actually start some accurate records but my hunch is windguru tend to be in the ball park with the strength and pretty good on direction wheras the met office are often 180 deg out on direction and miles off on force.

As the weather forecast looks pretty good, I decided to take Friday off and have along weekend around the solent. Not sure where I want to go yet, but probably Bembridge, Cowes and beyond the Needles if the sea is looking good.

As regards to the Met etc, I tend to look at several different websites like windguru, met, xcweather etc and then you have a good idea of the wind strength. Then on the day make use of the webcams suchas of Bournemouth, Cowes etc and the various weather sensors etc.

Lymington to Poole for us on Friday for the night and then probably a day at anchor around Christchurch bay somewhere on Saturday. Cant wait!

+1 to that, the approach seems to be never knowingly under-forecast
