Several of us (who are all old enough to know better) have been putting bigger and bigger outboards on smaller and smaller inflatable tenders in the hope of a higher top speed. We have so far managed about 16 knots from a tuned 8hp which felt plenty fast enough for me about 2ins from the water!!!!! (all done out of everyone elses way of course- wouldnt want to be branded as PWC types!!)

So now we have collectively run out of dingy/outboard combos- how about a twin engined 2.2metre tender?!!! (got a 2.5hp 4hp 5hp and 8+hp so no match!!!)

What does the panel think? How would we control 2 throttles and two engines- or is this all going to go horribly wrong in a Jackass stylee, like the transom will just tear clean out!!!!!

I am hoping for some suitlably ludicrous ideas.........

how about mounting the lot on the back of the boat (reinforced by an odd plank of wood maybe's sort you dont rip the ass out it?

or how about if you could team up with another dinghy/rib owner for a catamaran stylee preferably of course with the same hp engine(s)?

this sounds like too much fun - i might have to invest in an outboard as i have a dinghy but no engine - trials races could be arranged - you have possably started something here!

You already missed thse first round of the World Tender Racing chamionships in Alum Bay over the summer, but never mind...

We did toy with the idea of twin 8hps on a 2.8m mini rib, but even we thought that might be a bit lairy. I doubt there's room on the transom for two, but if there were, at least you wouldn't have to worry about steering as I doubt there'd be room to turn 'em.

I think the answer may be to get more controlled lift - a couple of years ago I had a 2m tender that I made a strap-on rigid bottom for. Roll-ups and airdecks are speed limited because the hull is all floppy, so the answer may lie in strapping a suitable placed sheet of ply on the bottom.

Questor is something of a genius in performace tuning, BTW. You can gain or lose a couple of knots through transom height and trim angle.

I did notice that the bottom of my slatted floor jobbie became kind of hollow and flappy at the stern at full chat!!!

Drag racing than if no no steering available on twins!!! I did notice you can steer by just moving from side to side ( I couldnt reach the tiller at the time as I was sitting at the front trying to hold the bl**dy thing in the water!

how about a winter offshore series for real nutters???.....!

I dont know about the tender, but I have driven a 20ft Rib with twin 225 hp engines. That was "interesting"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1

I have a 7' inflatable with slatted floor and a 6hp outboard and I too find that the floor goes all wobbly at full chat. I'm gonna lay a ply floor in it and fix the back of it to the transom to stiffen the floor up a bit. I'm also going to fit those wing thingys to the outboard. If it all works to improve the speed I'll let you all know.

Is that all? Only 16 knots? You've got to be doing something wrong! How many on board? How much do you weigh? Is the tender full of water? Even Wiggo can get 16 knots from his, and blimey, he's slow.

Unless some of you get you're act together, and put up some serious competition, it looks like I'll be taking the trophy home again next year.

I once had a 13ft Zodiac on the plane with twin Seagulls,it was not very fast but it sounded good.As you say controlling twins is fun especially with no kill cord and thumb throttles

A Ha!! No you don't, cos you didn't read the rules for one, and two, you weren't at the Alum Bay World Tender Racing Championship.

The smallprint in the rules quotes "8 hp Max". There's nothing though that says you only have to have one, as I think Wiggo hinted at earlier in this thread!!

Roll on next summer.
