Part of the decision to do the ARC was the support, added to that the party thing. Rally Portugal may not fit with the date juggling of school hols etc...
I'm not trying to mindlessly knock the ARC, the problem is I think quite a lot of people get enticed to join for the wrong reason, and it is expensive. The opinion I expressed wasn't strictly just my own, rather what I judge to have been the majority view among ARC skippers I have spoken to, or have commented here. Those that have got most out of it seem to be, as you say, skippers who relished the big build-up, socialising and the carnival atmosphere: and also those who have had some real interest in doing well in the race. But these were not the immediate reasons Ian gave for taking part.
