Now that\'s boat building....

Saw this on a scout around on tinternet looking at one of my all time fav long distance trawlery things (cus they were built 500 yards away from where I lived and I used to go and pester the old boys that worked on them when I was about 12 /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif)

Malahide trawlers, in those days (and probably today) there was nothing like them.

This one was built from an ex Whitby 1949 trawler, guess the conversion must have been around mid 1960's.

Lovely boat, but all the patched frames visible in the second and third pics are not something I'd like to have on a wooden boat...
Stage 3 and 4 (=pics 4 and 5), is that a "spot the difference" game? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I'd agree some look a little er, challanged! but then again I have seen darkened , black and what looks like old timber hit with a hammer and it just bounces off like it was hardened steel. Still a monster survey would be required but the site did say that all the work have been overseen by a very well respected surveyor.

Any news on your Stateside visit ? be interested to hear what you found / discovered on your travels.

Ermm, no, I wasn't questioning the sequence!
Trouble is, the 4th & 5th pics, which are supposed to show stage 3 and 4, are exactly the same... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Re. my trip, you're right, I also mentioned that I would have followed up on my findings.
But I'm a bit too lazy to put in written all what I saw/learned, which is really a lot.
Besides, it wouldn't be appropriate to disclose some of these findings (probably the most interesting ones) in an open forum...

It's great to see folks with the heart and energy to keep real boats like these in use. Wonderful "little ships".

So does that mean you knew Jack and Alf, or are you talking about the Portugese shipwrights they brought over?
Next question did you know Miles, the designer/naval architect at Southern Marine, if so, do you know his current whereabouts? The Jack I mentioned earlier was Jack Fielding and the uncle of a good friend of mine, who has been asking me if I can track down an email address for Miles. I think his name is Miles Stapleton, anyway my friend from school ain't too hot on t'internet and he would like to track down Miles. So if anyone out there can help, do let me know, I would not expect you to divulge anyone's address, just ask me to pass on my friend's details.

I never really met the owners or anyone from the office or management side, in fact I wasn't even supposed to be in the yard at that age but you could row around from the public jetty and sneak ashore, a lot of the work was done outside and there was always some one interesting to talk to. I remember one occasion the old boys were scrapeing mussels off the bottom of a trawler that was in for repair and boiling them up in a bucket over a wood fire from off cuts of oak from the yard, nearly gagged on the taste but didn't want to look like a big girl so forced them down, can still imagine it now, yuck !. I digress , the Jack chap who was one of the owners died some 20 years ago which I guess you knew as for the Miles fellow I never knew or met him but I have relatives still near Malahide who knew people there so I will ask if anyone has any info. There is a website somewhere that is dedicated to the Malahide but I can't remember the name but the guy that runs it is a fanatic so if you found it he would be the ideal guy to speak to.

Thanks Trev, Yes I knew both Alf & Jack and quite a pair of characters they were. My own nick name for them was Sidney Greenstreet & Peter Laury, because if you saw them sitting at a bar you could be forgiven for thinking it was the famous team from the 'Maltese Falcon' etc. Alf was the first to die and he literally fell off his bar stool one evening, he was dead before he hit the deck. Jack did not last long after Alf, Jack had never married and so without his business partner there was nothing for him. Very sad but they a real couple of characters. I have found the web site you refer to and been in communication with the guy who runs it, but as of yet I have not heard from him or Miles. If do find anything it will much appreciated.

THE SITE THAT HE IS REFERING TO IS CALLED CLASSICTRAWLERS.NET. THE WOMAN WHO MAINTAINS IT, I THINK HER NAME IS jOYCE. i BELIEVE THAT SHE OWNS THE URSA MAJOR. I AM THE OWNER OF THE MALAHIDE TESORO. SHE IS CURRECTLY ON THE HARD IN TRINIDAD. BTW THIS MALAHIDE IS FOR SALE. I HAVE NO SPECIFIC INFORMATION ON THESE PERSONS CURRENT LOCATIONS BUT IF I DO COME UP WITH SOME CURRENT INFORMATION I WILL FORWARD IT ALONG TO YOU.

Thank you for your response, it would be very interesting to find out about Miles, or even and tales about Jack and Alf, the previous owners of Southern Marine.
