Last year i managed a week in san diego with j world doing racing training. Fantastic trip and visited a mate in LA.

This year for various reasons need to book last minute and closer to home. (No jet lag, a bit cheaper!).

I don't really want to go on a cruising course. I have coastal skipper and never go cruising! What i do want to do is to practice helming for club racing. Want to come better than last occasionally....... Everyone says dinghy sailors are the best racing helms?

Minorca sailing looks perfect but finishes at the end of school half term in October.

Any other ideas? Or am i doomed to the dark for the whole winter........

Is anywhere in the med open in November? Is there any similar sort of thing in the Canaries? Is Caribbean an option?

I'm no expert on these places but I think the Med' gets a bit cold and blowy in winter.

A very experienced blue water skipper I know - who is the type who can look after himself - told me recently he's very wary in the Caribbean nowadays since the spread of ' crack ' drugs - when he sets off on his own project he's aiming to go straight past and into the Pacific as one of the few good bits left !

I'm sure there are safe places in the Caribbean but be very careful and do homework on the outfits - see the sad incident with ' Girlsforsail ' recently.

OTOH I did my YM in UK winter - more or less by accident - and discovered it's the way to get the top instructors, and fellow students who are serious, not just after a nice tan; hopefully this applies with dinghies too so maybe somewhere local with nice hot showers would be better and cheaper ?

Actually, knowing my luck , the boat will have just been laid up & the weather at home will be the best we have had all year & those gits who go on about leaving their boats in the water all winter ( cos they are too tight to have them lifted) will be grinning like cheshire cats--- but only for a couple of weeks then it will be business as usual & even they will get nowhere with their boats in spite of what they say
So book a week at home and be guaranteed good weather

I've done a dinghy holiday in the Caribbean with Nielson, but it was more like beach dinghy sailing rather than something more relevant to dinghy racing.

Unfortunately I cant recommend anywhere! Years ago I went dinghy sailing in ithaca in greece in early September. The weather was good, but the boats were looking tired as were the instructors - definitely felt like 'end of season and cant be bothered'. So I think the OP needs to go where the season is more favourable - the southern hemisphere?

For warmth in the Med in November you need to go east and south.. try Cyprus (average 22/23' and 6 hours of sun in November.. allegedly... :D )... these any good for example?

Otherwise I would be looking at the Canaries..

That looks like a great idea. Easyjet direct from Edinburgh to paphos. Not booking yet but looks interesting thanks.

Cant see much dinghy courses in the Canaries. Anyone know anywhere?
