Nova Panacea's first trip to River Dart

THanks for posting , a great bit of filming .
This year has been the best weather on record.
Over the last 10 years I cannot remember one like it , it’s only a shame for me I’ve not had a boat for the last 3 full seasons .
Watching this has given me a jolt , maybe I will start looking , but the prices will have to drop a bit first .

What a great video.

In 1080p the colours and details are great, drone footagae made it but clever editing.

Just one thing Ken Masters would have never let his deck totty pick up a mooring buoy, there is crew for that :encouragement:

Thanks for posting

One of the first times that I've flown the drone without having the worry of running a boat as well.
Actually, it was much harder than I thought it would be.
In the end, I used Active Track and let the drone follow the boat itself.
I had an ND filter fitted but the Images still have too much contrast.
I should have had the darkest filter fitted but the last time I did that we were in Mallorca and the cliffs turned out too dark.
Hey ho - maybe I will get there in the end.

Tip for DJI drone users:-
When I got home the footage that I had taken of NP was corrupt.
I was gutted so I searched on line and found the solution.
It seems that there is a problem if you don't stop the recording before switching the drone off.
The solution is to put the same memory card back in and record and stop a new clip.
The drone itself then fixes the corruption.
I was recording at 4K (3840x2160) and 30 FPS using a the MOV file format.
I like to target the finished video to 1K (1920x1080) - that way, I can zoom scenes to frame the video better etc.
Notice that I had to zoom the video during the editing to get a good view of the steam train in Dartmouth.
Phew!!

The non drone footage was taken using my Samsung S8 phone and a Zhiyum Smooth-Q gimbal.
Amazing how steady the video is with the gimbal fitted.
The Smooth-Q is only a cheap gimbal - The results are so good, I think I might pay more for a gimbal later.

The editing was done using KDENlive video software editor - an Open Source development so it is free to download and use.
I've used lots of editors over the last few years (Expensive ones like Premier etc) but, IMO, KDENLive beats them all.
All the features of the others seem to be there (LUTs and Key Frames etc) and it will run on a slow computer using their Proxy clips feature.
Great software that runs on all platforms - I use it under Linux Mint (Windows is finished for me now).

Hope this info helps.
Any questions - just ask.

Great video :encouragement: I was in Brixham on friday and just got home, the conditions were perfect. Loads of people out at the weekend on the water and quite a few dancing in the streets of Paignton after the football, quite amusing stuck at traffic lights with beered-up lads in full celebration blocking the road. I'd say a good weekend was had by all. :D:encouragement:

Nothing to do with the football, that's a normal Saturday night in Paignton............

Excellent video and Active tracking working very well at speed. You are getting very good at drone filming and not having to worry about the boat must have been a real bonus

Thanks for the kind comments.
However, I don't feel that I am making progress.
I worry a lot when flying at sea and having lost a drone in the water, I don't feel confident.
Active tracking is probably the way to go.
I'm planning on taking it out to Sant Carles for the summer.
This year, we are staying in the marina and the lagoon so I was thinking I would do some filming of other boats and maybe of the RIB or from the RIB.

That said, I think I've sorted out the video post processing - technically anyway - I don't have that artistic eye that others have.
The opening drone sequences in the above video are the same as the closing ones.
The difference is that the opening footage is a zoomed version.
I'm also not completely happy with the image quality.
Apart from one jerky sequence, the Samsung S8 footage is fine.
I adjusted the "levels" for the drone footage which made them better but not as good as the S8 clips.
As I said earlier, maybe I should have fitted the bigger ND filter.
The one that was fitted on this footage was ND8 - I have an ND16 and an ND32
I also have an app that tells me which one to use for a specific circumstance but I just don't get the time to think about all this stuff before flying.
And then, when the drone gets into the air there are loads of other things to think about.
I'm sure it is a matter of practice, practice, practice.

Thanks for the great video. Good music choice too. It brought back fond memories for both of us of the days when we coveted the Sealine 285 used in the series credits of Howards Way. We had a 195 at the time and a 285 was just a dream. Nice when things eventually turn out better than a dream!

Yes - I have been thinking of using it as a sound track for a while but it just doesn't seem right for any of my Med videos.
Using it in a UK waters video seems much more appropriate.

Excellent video Mike and great aerial footage - never get bored of the Dart or the fantastic coastline we have here. Every time we go out we take 100's of pictures and they all seem to capture something new!

Great looking boat there too Rod! Will keep a lookout for you out in the Bay :encouragement:
