10. The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee – Maritime Salute - 12:00 - Saturday June 4th 2022 :) - Peel Ports London Medway would like to invite all vessels to participate in a planned ‘maritime salute’ to celebrate the platinum jubilee of Queen Elizabeth II. All ports have been approached by the secretary of state for transport to assist in the co-ordination of the tribute. Please see the following extract taken from the letter received from the Transport Secretary which explains what is being proposed, we hope that vessels of all denomination support the initiative and sound their horns at the prescribed time.
To: Maritime operators
Her Majesty The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee
As you will be aware, 2022 marks the 70th anniversary of the accession to the throne of Queen Elizabeth II. This historic occasion a first for any British monarch is to be marked by a four day bank holiday weekend in June, with celebrations throughout the year In particular, we would ask that ports might want to consider displaying congratulatory messages on signage where able and appropriate, and for shipping, we would ask you to support an initiative proposed by the UK Chamber of shipping for a coordinated ‘Ships salute’ at 12pm on Saturday 4 th June. As a proud maritime nation and where the name of Her Majesty has graced not only cruise liners but also the largest ship in the Royal Navy fleet, we really want the Maritime sector to show
support with Merchant, Naval and leisure vessels alike by marking t he Jubilee with a synchronised ‘salute’ from their horn. Further information may be obtained from Medway VTS on VHF Channel 74, call sign “Medway VTS” or telephone 0151 949 6148 or 0151 949 6650.

That's the official stuff. Now...

SW Sunk swatchway. Gladys and I did the re-survey on Wednesday 18th May in quite remarkable conditions - flatter than a pancake. The result is taht the swatch remains feasible, viable and safe SUBJECT to noting that the nasty SW knoll has extended to the north and east. Fortunately the Middle Sunk on t'other side of the swatch has given a little space. You can download the chartlet at: Downloads (note that you have cleared an old cache or a very similar looking chartlet could still be there). Because of the migration I recommend that the mid waypoint should be adjusted. Using the 2021 mid point wpt is ok but is now closer to the steep edge of the SW Knoll. Note that in the last hour of the flood we had a 2kt spring tide flowing from east to west - obviously closest to the steep edge of the knoll but also over the knoll.

A caution about electronic charts, indeed paper ones as well. If you have an updated Navionics or C-Map electronic chart - updated since April this year - you would see the 2019 location of the swatch. If you ignored the rec. wpts. and followed the deep water you could well find the SW knoll!. If your electronic chart is older, you would get even older location for the swatch and as the swatch has migrated slowly and gently each year........ A four year comparison is interesting - well in a sort of anorak way. Is the swatch declining? No, don't think that it is but why it ever started in the first place is a mystery anyway. Oh by the way, Navionics and C-Map have included the update for the Middle Sunk in December, 2021. There is a finger extending NE from the Middle Sunk that dries. We didn't think it particularly nice there when we were there. At the moment we think there is a need for further investigation before that should be used. Oh, by the way, I can only speak for Navionics and C-Map as that is all I have.
