And a reader/forumite has sent me a Cruising Association RATS warning:

Galloper Windfarm Crew Transfer Vessel Passages

Harwich Harbour Authority

Warning to Members

Members are advised that Crew Transfer Vessels are operating journeys to and from the Harwich Harbour authority port to the Galloper Wind farm sites whose positions are outlined in grey (in the CT Vessel routes diagram). These craft have permission to travel at speeds up to 28knots within the Harbour speed limit area (red in the CTV speed diagram) and near to the recommended yacht tracks.

Whilst those in command of these vessels are trained to be aware of slow-moving craft, yachts are advised to keep a sharp lookout in all weathers especially when sailing close to the main channels, the designated small craft tracks or crossing them.

No specific notification of these vessels’ movements will be given by the Harbour Authority. They suggest that pleasure craft in the area should listen out for, or call Harwich VTS on VHF Ch 71, for advice about the current operational state with these transfer craft. They may also be transiting at night time.

This operation continues to be on trial. Should any seamanship cause concern with these crew transfer vessels, particularly their respect of COLREGS Rule 6, you may wish to report any incident to Harwich VTS or to RATS.

Through liaisons already set up with Harwich Harbour, RATS will then discuss the concern with the Deputy Harbourmaster.

I did email the HHA but no answer so far.

Not a lot of water off Halfpenny pontoon for you deep fin keel lovers. Big ship passing with keel stuck in mud will test those keel bolts.
