No UKHO notices this week affecting the monitored area.

One temporary notice from the PLA that anchor and diving work will be going on from today until Friday on the rock berm/cable cross over point at the Britned north cardinal buoy (just west of Princes South). Anyone going that way will need to keep clear by intruding into the buoyed channel.

Ah well, does you speak too soon. Will (OR4751) drew my attention to the current Belgium NtM wherein it quoths that the Netherlands in the zone of the Common Nautical Management (sound like the CAP?) has started a pilot project called PILOT VIRTUAL AIDS TO NAVIGATION!

It says " The Virtual Aids to Navigation (AtoN’s): The virtual buoyage is only used where physical buoyage is not possible because of the environment properties, for example, steep sidewalls and/or strong current, or for temporarily occasional purposes.

Virtual Aids to Navigation: Means that there is no physical marking but only an AIS-symbol! Virtual marking on navigation equipment: This marking is projected by AIS on the navigation equipment (ECDIS, radar or computer). The S-52 symbol is displayed on the screen. In the AIS information, the name of the buoy, the type and the position are shown." I like that touch. It don't exist but it has a name, a shape and a position. actually we've had virtual ATON for ages. They are called the SW Sunk beacon, the Sunk Beacon, the Little Sunk Beacon, the Long Sand Beacon, the NW Long Sand Beacon. 'Crunch', "Oh that will be the SW Sunk beacon; always had a lot of barnacles on it".

Actually, there is nothing wrong with the Johnalison method of planning. All these people who plan the perfect start time and finish their passage in half the time. Look at the fun they are missing.

So if you are going up the West Scheldt bear this in mind!

Change of the buoyage at the red side of the Geul van de Walvischstaart.
Move:
GvW2 to: 51°31,022’N 003°20,387’E
GvW4 to: 51°30,350’N 003°21,774’E
GvW6 to: 51°29,887’N 003°23,359’E
Establish virtual buoyage at the green side of the fairway Geul van de
Walvischstaart. This means that no physical mark is present but only an AIS
symbol!
GvW1 AtoN: 51°30,006’N 003°21,504’E
GvW3 AtoN: 51°29,848’N 003°22,634’E
GvW6 AtoN: 51°29,300’N 003°23,730’E

Guess we don't have the same idea of what constitutes 'fun'.
At sea, boring is good and exciting is bad.
And I don't set out with 'a plan', but a Plan A, Plan B and Plan C.
If none of those work, I make it up on the fly.
