Took my new boat out for the first time this weekend and the steering seemed very strange. It would go very stiff then when you nudged it round it went easy again, never it seems notching in the same palce. It is power steering. Fluid is full. Is there anything else obvious to lookout for. Volvo petrol engines 4.3GI. Steering seems to go round in notches rather than smooth.

Likely to be an air lock in the system, or a dodgy pump - ie the bit turned by the steering wheel!
Vetus, at one time had bleeding instructions in their manuals, but I just had a quick search, and couldnt find a link

Good Luck

or you might find the power steering belt loose.

A simple way is to check the fulid is ok and wind the wheel from lock to lock each way a few times. Often clears it. Open up the steering fluid reservoir after and see if it is frothy. I have a vague recollection this is significant but can't remember why - sorry!

Sorry to resurrect the thread.............did you solve the notchy steering?

I have the same problem, and have changed PS pump/cables/helm and the shield steering arms replaced and greased

Only thing left un-touched is the power steering arm

Any thoughts>

Ta
