This is great. We had some water damage here at home. Very reputable builders quoted £850 to fix it. Insurance company accepted their quote. The job took longer than expected and the builder complained the job was no longer profitable. They just sent me their bill for £1,295 the extra being for.... wait for this you will love it..............................

£120 for putting up a dust sheet and £350 for moving furniture out of the way where they were working and moving it back when they had finished.

If the builder quoted for the works as seen, and you gave him an order (written I hope) to do just
those works quoted then if he took longer that is his problem.

Only if the scope of works changed i.e. if you got him to do additional works would he have a case for
more money, and then he would need to get you to instruct him in wirtting to carry out the extra works.

By the way, why is he not billing your insurance company ?

Bearing in mind my recent posts regarding retaining 5% retention for a period I would strongly recommend
this course of action. I would not pay him any more than the quote.

I have just had a builder in to quote for water damage to bathroom water-resistant chipboard type floor. The Insurance Company sent a Building Company in Friday to do a quote.

He said the shower needs to come out (its on a concrete floor embedded in sand in an alcove away from floor repair that needs to be done and bathroom will also need re tiling as won't be able to match the tiles). Toilet needs removing (agreed) and joists need replacing !!!! On a concrete floor!!!

I will be onto Insurance Company first thing Monday morning.

I'm a builder and am appalled by the cheek of it. In my experience if there is a genuine increase in the scope of the work , an insurance company will come to the party if the assessor is notified. I concede that things may be different half a world away .
Tell them to get lost.

Some types will try it on based on what they think you can afford/are worth, so if you have a big house/nice car(s)/photos of your boat in view, they may let their imagination run wild. IMHO of course.
