On the walks along the Orwell, and I daresay all around, the Honeysuckle is out and filling the woods with scent and there is a good stand of Early Purple orchids in the hay meadow below the Ship at Levington (this is the last field you would walk through if you walked from SYH to the Ship)

And whilst on the subject of nature rambles, yesterday I enjoyed the larks singing above the marshes, the seals basking on the mud in both the Crouch and Roach, the oystercatchers constantly probing the tide line for whatever it is they find there, but, above all, for my first sighting of a pair of avocets on the banks of the Roach. Brilliant.

There was a flock of a couple of dozen avocets on the Roach dring the winter - lovely birds.

If you are in Pyefleet, look north over the marshes, and you are likely to see the resident marsh harriers. There were 5 there a couple of months ago, but we've only seen a pair more recently (or perhaps several pairs take turns to be seen). They are easy to identify, and gorgeous to watch. They often pass overhead on their way to hunt on the island.

I was camping with the Cubs over the weekend. During yesterday morning's hike around the large wooded camp site, we saw a herd/flock/school of deer. Amazing sight and the first time I've witnessed cubs being absolutely silent!

The river bank walk down from Shotley to Pin Mill is an absolute mass of wildflowers at present, and is a highly recommended way to kill a few hours.
