Is it helpful to label a post with a subject that doesn't give the slightest indication what its about?

All the "stupid questions" I've read here aren't stupid at all.

But if you must be modest then "stupid question about [whatever its about]" saves other users wasted downloading time if its a subject they are not particularly interested in.

In that case shouldnt you have titled your post 'Not a stupid question about stupid questions'
or
'Not a stupid question about not stupid questions titled stupid question'
or even
'Not a stupid question about posting with a subject that doesn't give the slightest indication what its about'

Or am I being pedantic /forums/images/icons/wink.gif

Shouldn\'t yours be titled . .

. . A Stupid answer to not a stupid question.

Or is it me who is being pedantic ???

Re: possibly, but

surely anyone who asks if they are being pedantic - isn't being pedantic?

I agree that with the originator, and that many threads are incorrectly titled, although the evaluation of awhther a question is a stupid question is subjective. I am not being pedantic.

Re: possibly, but

Probably all of us for carrying this on in the first place ! !

does the adjective "stupid" refer to the poser or the posed ... or all all posers stupid?

Well, I ceratinly proved you could pose a not stupid question in a stupid way.

The point I had in mind was simply to say how helpful it is if posters to say in the subject what their posting refers to. The point I proved is that nobody likes a smartarse.

You see the same sort of thing in small ads which start out with a phrase in bold like "Bargain" or "Unwanted Gift" or "Nearly new" instead of what the item actually is. Doesn't help when you are scanning for a particular item.

Actually bob I do agree with you and was just being stupid myself. Posts would be helpful with a more descriptive title.

Re: Stupid bob26

Yes, thread titles should mean something about the nature of the thread. I expect they ae used by those who jknow no better. But bob26 knows very much better. So, by setting a very bad example bob26 is unfortunatley promoting the very sort of behaviour he wants to eradicate. Therefore this is a stupid post. Well, not this one, but his one above. Mind you, I am now talking to him so that might make me a bit stupid too, whereas i should have ignored the foolish post. Damn!
