I've been to Chichester Harbour many times but I've never been up to Northney. I'm thinking of changing this next weekend.

Is there much up there? Good pub, good food, nice walks, anything of interest?

Sometime since I last went there but I don't remember much.

This is what their website says

"There are many attractions ashore within easy range of Northney, and frequent bus and rail connections from Havant, about two miles away.

Visitor attractions include the old Roman city of Chichester, the Historic Dockyard and ships at Portsmouth, and the beaches of Hayling Island & Southsea.

There are also some very pleasant local walks and cycle rides on Hayling Island, and there is also Langstone Hotel, with a fitness centre which is adjacent to the Marina.
A full range of brochures giving details of many attractions are held on the stand in the Marina office."

Northney Marina is out in the boonies but if you walk over the bridge/causeway[?] to Langstone village, passing the first pub, turn right down the next street there is a pub at the water's edge that was ok last time I went there. A good meal, good bitter and log fires. Unfortunately I can't remember it's name, or the one I told you to pass by, but as there isn't much else round there it shouldn't be hard to find. The walk from the marina to the pub has nothing to recommend it and a taxi would be worth the expense.

On the whole, you'll probably have a more entertaining evening if you apply some paint to your saloon bulkheads and watch it drying.

The George By Lanstone Mill...good food and real ale. Definitly NOT the one just over the bridge. The Hotel's plastic, little better than a Travellodge IMO.

If you fancy the walk, you can stroll along the waterside to Emsworth....by the time you get there, you'll have earned your pint. My Favorite Emsworth hostelry is the Sussex Brewery, just past the millpond on the way to Chichester.

Enjoy

The Royal Oak, Langstone.

There is also a very nice walk along the water's edge to Emsworth which has more pubs and restaurants.

Edit: - Ooops, sorry Topcat! Great minds think alike eh. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I was swithering whether it was called the Royal Oak or the George....someone looking over my shoulder "confirmed" my original post...........the comment about the grub and the beer is accurate tho'

Re: Northney Marina - Avoid the Hotel Whatever Circumstances

Last meal I had there food was plastic, service appalling - took hours. Now on the blackball list.
Go across to pubs or Emsworth as others have said.

Great place for an annual berth, turn up Friday night and cast off first light sat !

24 hour access is best bit but only if you draw .9 m springs so full of stinkers but even then there is a risk that a yacht will be stuck in the Chanel blocking access !

Keep an eye astern on the Red marker as the current will push you west over the mud bank and after you enter the marina water is starboard, there is a marl bank port awash at HW +/- 1 hour.

Went in there about 4 years ago late at night ... marina staff were excellent but walked off to find a meal and was not allowed into that hotel over the bridge. Well I suppose we wern't in our best gear.

I agree, Emsworth is much better. Definitely worth the walk. One of the pubs there [the Coal Exchange] has a great atmosphere and does a "curry night" on Tuesdays and an "international night" on Thursdays; all you can eat for £5.95. [You can't beat traditional English food!]

Would echo Daka. If you have any sort of draught watch the height of tide. The marina does not float your boat as they say!!. Far better to have a good night at anchor and a Bar B Q at East Head if the weather is good

Despite the lack of close pubs etc the strange thing about Northney is that it is one of the most fully booked of the MDL marinas. I asked there recently for an annual birth for my 8m boat and was told no joy and they were really not interested in small yachts anyway. A couple of days later I had offers of berths through the post from Hythe, Ocean Village, Shamrock Quay, Hamble Point, Port hamble and Mercury.... So Northney must have something going for it!

Northney is cheaper. I was there for 4 years. Nice place and a very pretty run up the Emsworth channel. It is quiet, and the pubs are a good walk away across the bridge. The second pub has more charm. The hotel next door is pretty bad Alternatively if yo have a tender and outboard you could go down to Emsworth... A bit if a trek but worth it. I liked Northney, and the guy who runs the place is very helpful.

Tis very true, the new berthing master can get a 40 ft boat in an 8m berth.
Fenders are frowned upon as they take up valuable space, if you dont manage to fit in your allocated berth ask for Dave who has a swiss army knife can opener at the ready /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

Great place otherwise.

Emsworth Coal Hole is excellent, used to be a regular there many years back, depsite living in Southsea. A friend lived in the house at the end of the street, where the back door opens onto the beach.

Does the Sussex brewery still do the O'Hagen's sausages?

Still does them though not such an extensive range. Kitchen's gone a bit more trendy, but not much more

It was bought by Youngs Brewery a few years back but still a good local

beware the emsworth bad boys - the o'haigans sausages have got better after the department of health warnings last year in the shop in bosham.
