I've had help from people on this forum with planning our move from Plymouth to the Hamble. I have also planned to move on to Northney and have a berth booked for the end of 2020. Then we have to decide where to base ourselves next year. Originally we were set on Gosport but our whole life plans have changed and Northney is a possibility. Is anyone here a Northney berth holder?

Is it your home berth? I've been googling to look for a shop when we need a bottle of milk, walks and obviously places to drop anchor for lunch. We're looking forward to exploring a new cruising ground and new social experiences. Gosport has a lot of active yacht clubs which has to go in the equation.

The AppleGreen garage shop is within walking distance just on the Hayling edge of the bridge.
A bicycle is best for exploring, but there are good walks around Langstone and down the Hayling Billy Trail.
There are various places to anchor or moor up in Chichester Harbour.

Sparkes Marina is better positioned for exploring seawards, but the traffic at peak times at the moment has gone a bit bananas.

We have decided to put our house on the market after we've moved the boat. 33 years here and 2 years pondering, the lockdown focussed our minds. Northney is a good place from which to explore that side of Hampshire and west Sussex which is where we want to move to.

Cathy, I don't know how big your boat is but the three times I've visited Northney Marina I've always found the berths to be very small (or at least the berths I was allocated as a visitor. Nice spot though.

Just under 12 m. We're going down to Portsmouth tonight for a few days so might nip over and talk to them thanks.

The marina office sells a few 'essentials' and as has already been mentioned there is a petrol station 10 mins walk up the road and two pubs 5-10 mins further across the bridge. There is a walk south along the old rail line down the island or north past the pubs to Emsworth and beyond. The is a berth holders association, that doesn't seem particularly socially active, but that could just be this year.. People are friendly but there really isn't a 'club' atmosphere or social scene. There are plenty of threads on here about anchoring around Chi Harbour, but aside from East Head it is mostly bouys.

There is a small cafe on site which gets good reviews on TripAdvisor but IMHO is pretty restricted in size, menu and opening times and seems to have been struggling to cope this summer.

We are 12m and have not felt that the berths are small.

I lost interest in the cafe earlier this year when it was full of people on 'groupon' discounts and we made to feel a bit stupid by being the only people paying full price.

I forgot to mention that at least one of the staff who happens to have a South African accent has an approach to customer service that brings to mind an old spitting image song.

That's the one, every time so far..

I keep thinking about moving to Northney but the limitations at the harbour entrance when compared with Portsmouth which is all state of tide and pretty much all weather makes me think twice.

That and the reports of blackbird droppings :)

which marina are you in?

I think the berths towards the marina office end of the marina are more sheltered than Gosport, I no complaints about the site team and as a raggie that it was just been dredged is a good.

However I suspect being able by refuel at Premier's berth holder prices would add up to a fair old saving and then it is down to which other marinas from the group are of most interest.

No idea about respective prices though.

Haslar seems to have more members of the forum berthed here - which may be a good or bad thing!

I drove to both last year when in Portsmouth and the prices are about the same. I didn't notice the fuel though and that would make a difference thanks. Also if I'm remembering correctly I think the carpark at Gosport is more convenient. We're spending a week in Gosport before heading to Northney and we're MDL until the end of March so will decide before then where we want to be. The social side is very important.

Gosport is somewhat underwhelming as far as food and pubs go. If you drive to the boat then the local traffic can be a bit of an issue, noting the irony that you are part of the problem of course. Handy for the Solent though. If you don't mind the lock then Port Solent might be worth a look too.

I'm intrigued by the comment about active yacht clubs at Gosport - which ones were you thinking about?

Edit - If social is important Chichester Marina has an onsite club as well as a decent enough restaurant, the lock can be a pain in the neck though.

I loved Chichester, it is very beautiful there. Decent enough on site facilities and an active club as you say. Plenty of pubs and resaurants either.a walk away or a short cab ride. The lock was manageable. It was a bit of a trek out and if you want to be in the Solent then that extra diustance may be a factor.
