Kwak et al, planning ( again!) to come to Canaerfon on the 1st July leaving Liverpool about midday arriving at puffin about 5 ish, low tide at Menai is 8 pm but Viccy dock don't open till 10 pm- is it best to get through Swellies and anchor/ moor somewhere outside the Victoria dock ( if so where?) or wait at Menai till 10 pm ish when there is more water?

thanks for any responses.

Mike

Hi mike I would not go through the swellies at low nor when going dark , unless you have done it a lot Kwai is the expert I would pick a mooring up in the Menai then go through in the morning or you can tie up in Menai bridge against the boat ,prince maddoc, all states of tide then you can walk ashore and go for food and beer, cheers roy

Ive not checked the tides but if low is at 20.00 as you say its Springs
Which means its a narrow path through the Swellies
Hang on. if its low when you say you wont get into vIccy dock at 22.00
I will check

If you leave Menai Bridge at 2i.30 hours it will give you plenty of time to get to Caernarfon before the gate is raised
Which will allow some water to fill in the Swellies
As Seastoke says though its not a Place to mess with if you are not sure of the way through
Yes you can tie up alongside the Prince Madoc to wait for water or the pontoon/platform on the pier behind the Madoc or yes, just pick up a mooring
If you think you are going to get into the Strait at 17.00 by Puffin, why not go 'strait' to Caernarfon??

thanks Roy and Kwaka , Kwak we cant go straight through as my main crewman on board can't anchor or jangle on a bouy - he is seasick big time. So, with the Vicci dock closed till 10 pm BST , if theres nowhere to get him ashore at Canaerfon we shall have to wait it out at Menai. If you are thinking 21.30 will be enough water then thats great and it will be pretty light. Do i have to contact someone to get permission to moor up at Menai?

I have had training from you ( and mate Bryn) but must admit if you are about ,happy to supply beers to shepherd us through :D

If you are at Puffin at 5 ish I'd go straight through and wait on the other side. You'll be at the swellies at 5:30. You could even shave some time off if you did The Swatch. I'd wait in or just after Rowen bay personally if Plas Menai is on a spring low when you get there or if you have enough depth still to get through wait at aber menai. Waiting for the flood at Swellies you stand to be caught out and have to do the journey in the dark and that is not something I would recommend at all!. The Menai is calm almost all of the time. Anchoring is easier than berthing. On spring low it will be real calm and shallow. Just throw the hook out and sit it out. till VD opens

Your crew won't cave on this

Kwakker's boast of claim to fame is he has hit every rock on the Swellies. There is one rock off Landwyn which he claims he has not hit. He confesses that these days he hits rocks in "other peoples boats".

Whatever you do do not let him on your boat. Follow him instead..... at a safe distance. You'll soon find out where the submerged rocks are. As for Seastoke. You should know he does not navigate. That's his Admiral's job. She took this task on as a matter of self preservation and not something to share workload over.

I gotta say Mike. You are between a rock and a hard place because I wont be there to rescue you. I'm at a wedding. Good luck!
