I have been using a Standard Horizon plotter for a year now and have left it on the default North Up setting. On the odd occasion I get a bit confused /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gifwhen heading south -I turn right (aka to starboard or west) yet my ships icon on the screen turns to the left. Something to do with being upside down I think - not physically of course !

Think I might try the Course Up setting. Which setting do others prefer and why . Thanks .

Course up for me. The little arrow in the left corner tells where north is. Also set the curser to be at the bottom of the screen rather than the middle, I mean who's interested in where they've been? Much better to have the screen show you what's in front.

whatever works for you !
I can see the logic of north up if you are doing alot of nearby chartwork, so both plotter and chart are the same.
Where there is alot going on around you,ie coastal, I find course up easier to relate the screen with what you see around you, but when there isnt anything to see , on a passge, I seem to find the north up view of the whole passage a bit more intuitive.

As I always look at a map north up I prefer the CP to be north up.
The problem with course up is the delay in heading change where what is infront of you isn't in front on the CP ...

Only time that I turn the plotter to course up is when I use the (Furuno 1623) radar so that the two screens (side by side) show a similar representation.

Thought it was only the girls who turned the map upside down when heading south /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif (Runs back to PBO forum)

hi it's north up for me(boat&car) when i try the other way it just feels wrong don't know why, possibly something to do with knowing where north is,but i do agree it's a little confusing when heading south regards m m 1.

It's personal preference so folks should do whatever they prefer but I always use North Up. Ditto with the car satnav. Not sure i can explain why, but it seems a "purer" way to navigate to me and a good habit to get into?

Opposite works for me - Head Up

Different strokes for different folks /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I have my plotter set with the boats position about 70% of the way down the screen - that way, using the course up option, you have 70% of the screen showing the dangers/safety you are heading towards, and only 30% of the screen showing the dangers where you have been ( and are unlikely to hit! ).

Works for me.

North up. Course up is for girlies with no sense of spatial awareness

I have also set my radar displays to North up.

There is total freedom to do that which makes most sense to you.

I use North up onboard, because I have spent my life looking at charts and radar that is oriented to North.

However, I do use my car stanav on course up!

And of course North up is for those who have no sense of direction. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

The 70/30 thing is totally separate from the course or north up question. You can have the 70/30 function with north up or with course up (on Raymarine, and probably other makes)
