Does anyone have any experience of using the Rhine route to the Med (down to Basel, then over to Chalon-s-Saone, and down the Rhone?

(We're a 30' Nelson - twin screw)

Is this route a sensible option, or are there problems with it?

Regards

Joe

Welcome. Stick around. You will find many here with the experience you are looking for. I would also try the live aboard site. However it is frownd upon to post the same question on two forums, so errr. Re word it a bit!!

There are many books on the subject, or you could try the search thingy, where most of these subjects have already been discused.

A quick search on t'internet came up with a few pointers :
I.C.C req'd
Very strong currents on the Rhine
200 locks to contend with! (that should do wonders for your triceps!)
And it can take up to 8 weeks to do the journey

Hope that helps Regards Dave

The alternative, through the French canals via Paris is full of locks too - many more of them<g>

ICC not an issue.

Can you give me a pointer to a site which describes the current along th Rhine?

Regards

Joe

I'd also post this in scuttlebutt forum. There are many raggie type sailors who take this sort of route down, and the options have been discussed there more frequently than here.

I believe most locks are manned or auto, so triceps not an issue.
Given the time I would prefer to take 2 or 3 months and enjoy some of the smaller canals on the way.
Alternatively, what about the Canal du Midi?
For a 30 ft power boat with I imagine no flybridge, shouldn't be a problem.
Check draft requirements.
