As a cruising club, 10 boats were arranged to cruise up from Lowestoft to the north Scroby bouy and then into Yarmouth culminating in a night of socialality at the Berney Arms. The said hostelery is situated at the other end of Breydon water prior to entry to the river up to Reedham and beyond. Then came along the Quango Known as the Broads Authority!
The fee, levied by the Broads authority, for my boat alone, spending one night at said hosetlery was to be £88.00. mind you, having said that, the fee also included absolutly zilch, nada infact nothing. No electricity, no water nothing. I could have berthed in Monte Carlo for less. The Broards Authority is more interested in the bittern than any one else. Now I have no problem with the Bittern. The word is that it is a thing to behold. I have never seen a bittern. I have never heard a bittern and quite frankly I dont give a s--t about the bittern. I do give a s--t about the pound in my pocket and have decided to keep it that way. So, the demise of another struggling buisness is imminent and another nail in the coffin of boating on the Norfolk Broads. Just who do these people think they are.
I am thinking of donning my Jesus sandles, buying a copy of the Guardian and claiming my right to roam.
There are miles of pleasent waterways on the Norfolk and Suffolk Broads, and, Fair enough, they have to be maintained at a cost. The problem is that they are not maintained.Yes it is true that they have dredged Ranworth Broard. where most of us cannot get to anyway, but why did I drag the bottom at Oulton Broad last time up there when it was supposed to have been dredged not 3 months previous.
The Beauty ofthe Broards is being denied to the likes of us hence the spiralling decline of the boating industry on the broards, the culprit? the bloody bittern.
Given the welcome afforded to visiting leisure boaters by the Gt Yarmouth Port authority(or should I call it East Port) It seems that both these quangos are hugely opposed to the likes of us. Shame on them
