I fancy a day out to the above cos the Mrs has never been.
Where would be the best place to head to. Nice village, shops, obviously on the river/broad lots of boats to see both in marina and on river/broad. Want somewere that you can get a feel for the broads, maybe boat hire for a few hours or a day available too.
Thanks - Ian

Hello.

There are two places I would recommend.

Wroxham:

Good shopping, pub with good beer and food, two chippies (the smallest one is the best, you can tell by the length of the queues sometimes), dayboat hire and there is also a narrow gauge railway that runs for some miles up the Bure Valley.

I think the piece of river upstream of the bridge is the best and there are two good pubs near the end.

Potter Heigham:

Not quite such good shopping but Lathams is quite comprehensive but do check for quality. There is a chippie with a long queue but this is not due to quality, only slow un co-ordinated organisation.

The saving grace is Hickling Broad which can be reached by day boat hired from Potter Heigham and in my opinion is the best part of the Broads and should not be missed. there is also a good pub (the Pleasure Boat) at the end of the broad which serves good food.

The lower broads have some interest but if you are just going for a day trip I think these two locations would be better.

Regards.

Alan.

I agree, Wroxham or even Horning

I think, although I could stand corrected that it is something like forty to fifty odd quid to hire a sixteen foot all weather boat for the day.

WroXam and poTter Heigham thats a bit like telling someone who has never been to the coast to go to Blackpool or Margate.
i soppose it all depends what your looking for if you just wana sit out side a pub get pissed and then eat a bag of chips then hell your headin' in the right place boi'.
If you actually want to expeiance the Norfolk broads in there prime then you will be sadly dissapointed, Hickling broad (Hickling) or Cockshoot broad in ranworth, at Ranworth you will find a delightfull Norfolk villiage and a very interesting nature walk with a nature reserve centre at the end where you can look over Ranworth broad 'propper', and yes there is a pub 'The Malsters'. Given more time to arange i would have offered to take you out for the day on mine but im a little bussy now.

Used to have an Uncle who lived in Sea Palling - very quiet I seem to remember. Is every shop in Wroxham still owned by a chap called Roy?

To hell with it all. Why do I even bother to even bother to answer anything!

The man wanted a day out, a bit of boating and shopping and a meal!

If you really want to experiance the Norfolk Broads then you need to spend more time there.

Read and assimilate the original post and then reply to what the poster wants.

Goodbye!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It appears so but I suppose this boat doctor bloke who seems to know everything may be able to tell you.

Seriously though, it appears that Roy used to have a van and sell groceries in the area and then branched out to shops apparently with success. He is now deceased but his legacy lives on.

Regards.

Alan

Thanks to all the ladys and gents who replied. Seems we have a bit of a misunderstanding between two people regarding places to visit, not too sure why. Anyway for the record I have spent a week on hire boat on the broads back in 89 and loved the place. Trouble is I cant remember all the places I visited and which ones were best. The current Mrs its only money has never been and I keep going on about the place so I thought I had better take her sometime soon. Really want quaint village on river with marina and lots of boating traffic.
Just remembered a village at the end of a narrow river off the river Bure half way between Norwich and G,Yarmouth spent 1st night tied to a tree there but wasnt told too well about the tide. Woke up at 4am with boat on a not very nice angle dangling from said tree by its bow and stern ropes. Had to cut it free with knife. All of the above carried out stark naked. Anyway I digress. Also heard of late that the broads has gone down hill a bit and not as I remember from 89. any comments on this.

Agree with the others on Wroxham - as for the day hire speak to Barnes Brinkcraft as they have decent dayboats and many of the others are very cruddy boats indeed.

dayboats

I would book in advance though as they go early.

If you decide to make a night of it, check out The Petersfield Hotel in Horning which is lovely and has a good restaurant, plus it's own moorings on the river.

I think your original question as to what you wanted to do on the Broads and the information which I supplied re. Shopping, the better places to visit etc. seemed to inflame this other chap who seemed to want you to see all the Broads in one day. When I mentioned "pub" he seemed to insinuate that it was an excuse to get drunk. The fact is that to a visitor, many of the pubs in Norfolk provide excellent food and a pleasant drink, be it alcoholic or not. As a regular visitor I do appreciate the countryside in its various moods as on the Broads and tried to point out a couple of my favorite places where I tend to linger for a while and which I thought you might like to see.

Whereas I may have supplied you with the relevant information it seems I cannot please all.

Regards.

Alan.

Having monitorred this thread Alan , I was surprised that you got the reaction you did , I agreed with your suggestions but was busy having a fight elsewhere so couldn't help out . The norfolk broads are excellent to visit , but sometimes you do get the feeling that all they want is your money . Not all of the locals are friendly , but I think you know that now /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Hello Trevera25. Yes you are dead right. As a regular visitor on my trailered boat for something like fifteen years and on hired boats many years ago I was also suprised by the reception of my genuine comments, especially as the original poster wanted shopping and a trip on the river and I think you and anybody who knows the Broads would agree with me.

With regards to "all they want is your money" it does give that impression up there. Whilst I am all in favour of profit, employment, and a decent standard of living for all, one does get that feeling.

I can give a number of examples but one stands out in my memory. I was filling up my two gallon water container at a nameless boatyard and the owner came out and quite stroppily told me that I am not going to moor on his water point. I explained that I was only filling my can as I have done for a number of years at this point and would put a couple of bob in the box. He insisted that I paid the full two pounds for my water. I emptied the container on the ground at his feet and told him exactly what was in my mind. unfortunately, this bit is unprintable! /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif
