Nordhavn V\'s ....er what????

Just been asked what else is of similar ilk 40 -55' ocean going type Nordhavny thing that could tackle cruise to Scandinavian coast -Iceland and onto Greenland and then US, er apart from Selene I am stumped, got to be reasonably newish no bigger than single 300hp lump and built to take a beating.

Any Ideas?

I don't think that's funny at all - nice link and sensible thought

suspect they may be looking to spend a bit more and the wood and 1956 would cause furrowed brows but I have to admit to being interested!

I thought of those - but they're more in the semi-displacement mode, with twin 460hp lumps and a cruising speed of the high teens.

OK, so a bit bigger, two lumps and there's only one in existance. But still, how about one of these? Designed for the same task - long distance power cruising.

Mine can do all that. See link at the bottom of my sig.

You'll have to build one first though!

I was just thinking of their intended cruising area. I know if I was going up in that direction in a motorboat, then I'd either go for serious speed to enable you to outrun the bad weather when possible, or get something built like a brick (ahem) out-house for when you can't...

If the budget is up to it, this lad looks likely:

Re: Nordhavn V\'s ....er what????

Thanks friends, lots of info there and stuff I never knew about. Looked at all of them and as happens get led to other sites that do similar. Jeez is a big world out there in trawler land!.

Have to say though that Nordhavn do seem to have a lead in the market and are just unbelievably constructed, a few of the others do look a bit sort of pandering to a fashion and I just wonder how much real thought has been put into the design for real serious passage making.

My colleague is considering some seriously nasty bits of water hundreds of miles from anywhere so it has got to be the best of best so to speak hence the fairly new requirement and single super dooper reliable engine ( wonder if Nordhavn would fit a refurb'd Gardner 8LXB! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif).

Seriously though, this is a once in a lifetime thing and he will take a year off to do it, as he said no point thinking about it when I retire, could have arthritis, dicky heart or God knows, now or never. Thing is what ever he goes for has to retain a fair hunk of money at the end and it seems the Nordhavn's have that one sewn up.

This is looking a serious contender, delivery hours and good saving

Stick with the Nordhaven! the owner of the company is a nice guy so I bet the service is good? Great engine room design and the engines are good old long term pladders ex tractor sort like the Gardiners were! IMHO

Re: Nordhavn V\'s ....er what????

Err, the Nordy has twice the displacement of the Fleming, twice the fuel, and drafts a full foot more. Not my idea of "same style".

Re: Nordhavn V\'s ....er what????

Fleming v Nordhaven? Fleming has a much much lower COG. In an emotional sea, if the stabilisers fail on a Nordhaven, it can be serious. Anyone seen the Atlantic Rally DVD...? On the Fleming, the roll is far less. But then I'm a Fleming owner so I'm biased.

Must say, though, that I would far prefer a single engine Fleming if ever Tony Fleming could be persuaded to make one. Flemings are excellent displacement speed boats. 8 knots is bliss. Never thought I'd ever say that since I used to be real speed freak.

Now we enjoy the passage making. The longest this year was leaving Goes (Holland) at the 9am bridge and ending up at Dover Marina at 0020 the next day. So exciting, especially crossing the Dover Straight at night....brilliant.
