Nordhavn 62 a someone help put me off this pleeease!

We weigh 27 tonnes in cruising trim according to the gauge on the lift at Hamble Point. I think the thrusters are fine for the weight but wind can overcome them. I don't know what boat you've got but the Nordhavn design concept results in a lot of side wind resistance. Twice last year I was in wind conditions while berthing that the thrusters could not overcome, and of course it's at times like that when you discover the limitations of a single main engine. On the other hand I wouldn't fit bigger thrusters because in such conditions you would need ridiculously big thrusters to make a difference (and, perhaps, more experience than I've yet got :o).

Feel free to PM me if you want to talk more about this.

I can tell you for sure that experience does help. Not because I can pretend to have that much - and none at all with single screw boats, in fact.
But I did see an almost 30m steel fishing vessel with single engine and no thruster at all maneuvering in VERY strong crosswind, and saying that the helmsman left me speechless is an understatement.
Trouble is, to maneuver effectively in those conditions you must do everything FAST, and using very strong engine bursts.
Captain Ron's youtube video springs to mind...
But in turn, this means that any mistake is potentially a very bad one!

...this is where many boats choose to draw the extra hydraulic power from the wing engine...
Aha, fairenuff.
I understand the rationale of having a pump ALSO on the wing engine, on top of the one on the main, for EXTRA power.
This way, I suppose that in "normal" conditions the boat can maneuver without necessarily firing up the wing engine - as well as recover the anchor.
My previous comment was based on a (wrong) understanding that the thruster and windlass couldn't be used at all without turning the wing on...

The high hours on the wing engine are because it has a hydraulic PTO for driving the two hydraulic thrusters
I've just remembered another reason why some Nordhavns have high hours on the wing engine. I know of one boat which has over 1200 hrs on the wing and the owner says that most of that time has been spent trolling for salmon.

So that owner has a trolling engine that he uses for trolling. How apt!

late reply, just saw your post about bow thrusters & your Nordhavn.

This seems to be the official Nordhavn bow thruster upgrade... no joke. I spotted this work done at Hamble Point.

Did you progress this interest any further? I would be interested if you viewed in Greece?

I saw the boat advertised as being in Gib, that would have been an easy trip for us but then I realised it was actually in Greece...
Probably a good thing as Ann is slowly coming around to the sail boat - but if we continue to have good fortune, I definitely see a boat like this in our future....
