Nord West flybridge 42

When I bought the Princess P42 in 2007 the one boat I never got round to seeing was a Nord West. It had just been voted boat of the year by one of the mags so it was with some trepidation that I boarded at the next boat show, (there weren't any to see in the UK, we were going to have to make a trip overseas other than the boat show).

If we liked it things were too late as the Princess was, by now moored safely in Haslar. As it happens we needn't have worried. I was actually rather surprised it picked up the award. Twice!

Build-wise it looked fine, the issue was a saloon which centred around a dining table rather than comfortable seating and it wasn't big enough to service the 3 cabins. The sales guys were suggesting that the cockpit could be used as a saloon but as an all year round boater I wasn't convinced. Also the fit out was more akin to a sailing boat compared to the British builders.

Don't get me wrong, the timber work looked great, just not a style the did it for me. The big issue though was that saloon.

Given the relatively few you will find on the market sellers will be able to name their price without risk of being undercut. The issue is whether would be buyers agree and hand over the folding.

If you can find one for sale go and have a look. Ultimately you and I might have different views on what makes a good boat.

I got to within an inch of ordering one 5 years back and went to Sweden for a seatrial.

A friend of mine had a 390 which was a good fast boat with a pair of D6 310hp outrdrive which went like **** off a shovel.

The 420 is either with IPS or outdrives and is a well thought out well put together boat, It sleeps six in three cabins with two bathrooms and the galley is in the saloon.

The volume of the boat is less than the equivalent princess or fairline fly bridge of the same length.

With outdrives they are fast economical boats with good seakeeping.

The joinery is good and the storage and detailing very good in the end i swithched and went for a secondhand semidisplacement.

Nordwest sell direct only. there are a few 390, 420 and 370 in the uk and they take trade ins which they refurb and sell in scandinavia.

There is a 420 in Jersey and a couple in the uk.

The one i was considering with a pair of D6 350 on outdrives was topping out at 34 knots and cruise was 25 to 28 knots, now the D6 is rated at 370 hp so should be a bit faster.
