hi
after trying yachts have decided that singe anded is not for the noob,
so what i want to know is
1 motor boatds, how far can they go, could a £10,000 boat get me to the med ?
2 what sort of profile do i want for just getting accross the channel and not into sparts
3 name a few boats that are worth looking at, i would like to live onboard a few weeks a year
thx

1 In fuel yes!
2 Many types will do this
3 The more info you give the better the advice you'll get. How many of you - range - style etc.

Good luck - it's great fun.

Sounds like an old heavy displacement wooden boat would fit the bill.

Something like this (clicky).

But prepare yourself - it'll need work for that kind of dosh.

What speed are you wanting to travel at? (Generally, faster boat = thirsty boat).

well this is my first enquiry, so i am very vague on what i want, speed wise, 12-15 knots cruising with 18-20 max, enough to not worrie too much about currents on short runs back to moorings, so anything thats not too expensive to run with 2 cabins 4 berth, i would like to be able to go offshore, if if was going to do just river stuff,i would buy anouther narrow boat,
thx for the wooden boat link, not what i had in mind but an interesting idea, will have to look into that
thx

Hmmmm, says more about the Hadyn, than it does the OP.

I wonder how long it will be before he gets called a Pikie??

To the OP, persivere, there are some good guys on here. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

We do get a fair few trolls hereabouts. Looking at the original questions...

1. You could get to the Med in a bathtub if you try hard enough, so yes to that one. But you need to tell us more. A £10k mobo boat will probably not make it to the Med via Biscay by virtue of being too small for the sea conditions or not having the fuel range. The canal route opens up far more possibilities.

2. If you rule out watersports then your choice of boats is wider and you can look at semi- and full-displacement boats. These will be far cheaper to run than a planing mobo and probably more comfortable for cross-channel stuff given the budget.

3. Others will suggest options, but again let's have more info: you say single handing, so I'm guessing a 2 berth boat is OK. What's your idea of "living aboard a few weeks a year"? Weekends and long weekends, or a three week stretch where you will need a full galley, loads of clothes and provisions stowage, a decent sized head/shower?

"We do get a fair few trolls hereabouts. Looking at the original questions..."

I know you do Graham, but I have the feeling that if the chap had said, I have a 100k budget, followed by his questions, certain remarks would not have been made. If he is a troll, you will find out quick enough /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Hardly going to encourage anyone new from posting here if that is the kind of reception they might get. Troll or not, it puts people off - fine if thats what the forum wants, not so good if we want more people on here.

hi again first let me thx the majority of ppl who have tried to help me find out what i need to know, and don't worrie about the odd mincy little wimps who put ppl down on forums they are never the type to do it face to face and just show how sad there little lives must be,
ok so i gather £10k will cross the channel and maybe to ireland, but the med would only be possible vie canal in france.
and heavy or none sporty boats will get me more for my money,
ok the fairline holiday linked to, would that cross channel and go alone the canal to the med? and the old wooden boat link to that sort of looked like it could travel a bit!
i was asked about accomerdation, i am a tramping trucker i live 5 days and nights in a 7' by 5' by 5' cab so i don't need the home comforts that most ppl do, i would need a second bed for visitors though
and again many thx to the ppl who have taken the trouble to try and help me, i live in the Wolverhampton which is not know for its boating
and for the record you seem much nice ppl than the yacht forum, half of them choked on there pimms when i asked about sailing

To be honest, I think if you were to take your time in looking something will turn up that will more than suit you. I am afraid it's just a fact of forum life that most on these forums are failry comfortable to well off, I don't think many of them give a thought to the fact that there are thousands of boaters / sailors out there that have a happy time on very much smaller budgets than they are used to discussing in forum.

As it happens, I am a raggie, and I enjoy sailing, this forum is primarily for folks from the dark side, or stinky side if you like /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I still enjoy some of the input on this forum, even though my own interest is in sailing, probably on the principal of "Know Your Enemy" /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I hope you find what you are looking for, and if you do find something, and are not sure about it, pop in here and ask, there are many folks in here that will be able to help.

Well I'm normally quite nice really. It's just that your ideas did seem a bit implausible.

I suppose you might just get to France on a ten grand mobo, depends which bit of the chanel you were crossing. But theres only a few days a year when the weather is good enough to attempt it.

To give you an idea. A hundred grand boat would be more normal for crossing the chanel and a million pound one might just be good enough to sail to the med. Ten grand would go some way in paying the fuel costs.

See what I mean...Totally out of touch with reality!.....Hlb!! hundreds of people cross the channel every year in boats that cost a whole lot less than 10k! Both rag and stick and stinkies! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif Many have gone a lot further than the Med......
