Non-Toxic (pink) antifreeze.

Years ago I tried one of the dedicated antifreeze products from a camping shop, as a test on a new to me boat where I was not familiar with it's plumming.

A bit expensive, did the job but left a smell/taste that kept for most of the followng season.

Ever since I just drain the system as before.

Try Elsan. I personally wouldn't want to deliberately drink any, but this is 'food approved'. If you add before draining tanks, some residue will be left in any low lying pipes etc. When you refill tanks in spring, run any taps use for drinking for a minute or two. Our previous boat was delivered from the factory with that stuff in the domestic water system and the dealer neglected to tell me during the handover - my first cup of tea on board was "interesting"...

I use Freezeban, which I think is propylene glycol based. I drain the domestic water system by running the taps until dry, then put the 5L of Freezeban plus 5L water in the tank, and run the taps until they run pink. Seems to work OK, but I do have some strategically placed tube heaters for backup.
To restart, I drain again, then flush clean water through. It does foam a little, but we what little water (usally other drinks!) we drink we use Sainsbury's Basics bottled rather than from the system
