The stuff in my link has no rust inhibitors. It's pretty much just propylene glycol and a bit of pink dye. Therefore it can be used safely in water tanks as well as engines etc. In engines it will prevent freezing, but will not inhibit rust. In water systems it can be flushed out at the start of the season and will not leave any toxins.
 
Why on earth is anyone interested in whether antifreeze is toxic or not??? You're not going to drink it, are you? Well, not unless you like Austrian wine I suppose, and that never hurt anyone.

You say its used in domestic water systems yet you wouldn't want to use it. Eh??? Care to explain?

Why "wouldn't I want" to use Glycol? I've used it in every car I've ever owned, as has every car owner in the world. I wasn't even aware it was hazardous to use - tho clearly not something you'd drink, but then you don't drink diesel, bleach, shampoo or gelcoat polish, and yet you handle those without getting worried. Mechanics in garages where I used to work used to taste the water to see if there was enough antifreeze in it - and they survived their careers - You make it sound like arsenic. It isn't.

And marine life? One tends not to dump tons of glycol into the oggin either but a boat is hardly going to carry enough to do much damage in a small rockpool, let alone in the ocean.

just looked up the toxicity of Ethylene Glycol. "As little as 4 fl oz may be enough to kill a man". Well, for a start you have to drink the stuff, it doesn't harm you otherwise so it has to be a conscious act and you don't scoff a tumbler full of neat antifreeze by accident do you? Or a pint of you engine's coolant.

So I submit it is actually pretty harmless stuff. Unlike diesel or bleach, both of which will kill with far less than 4 fl oz. As will seawater if you breathe it.

Still, if we lived in a world where everything was either edible or cotton wool it would be really nasty stuff, but we don't so I ain't gonna get in a sweat over harmless antifreeze.

You wouldn't want to put ethylene glycol in your fresh water tank! And if you're going to by running up your engine in the sea/river/lake, you don't want to be flushing out your ethylene glycol and poisoning the environment. Do you?
 
Well, your passage through life is going to be somewhat fraught if you are so paranoid about non-issues like that.

I'd recommend extreme care over the other liquids in your engine that are also toxic. Oil for a start. Its carcinogenic too if you have a diesel! Best replace it with something harmless like golden syrup. Oooh! Don't know if that's safe - it's fattening. And diesel - nasty stuff. Put that on your chips and it could end badly if you ate enough. Like you do. Use distilled water instead, but don't drink too much; it strips ions from your blood. (makes your chips soggy and easier to choke on too...)

On second thoughts best give up sailing altogether, it's far too dangerous to be safe.

Who are you guys? Politically (in)correct health and safety job-creation scheme cotton-wool ayatollahs or something?

There are sources of propylene glycol based antifreeze which were in my original post .

This is what prompted the original post but following all the rubbish from another argumentative forumite I deleted it.

IIRC there is at least one other propylene glycol based Starbrie antifreeze which you will find on their website and available from other on line chandlers.

you need to look closely at the different Starbrite ones to unravel the temperature figures ( basically they do one for -200 F one for -100F and one for -50F. these get confused with degrees C I think)

In fairness to those who became too enthusiastic about their chaptalisation it was straight glycerol, which is slightly less toxic than the ethanol that wine contains.

Glycerol has a low toxicity and is sweet tasting but is not fermented to form alchohol AFAIK.

IIRC some Austrian wines were once in fact found to contain ethylene glycol... added as a sweetener??

It's the sweetness that makes ethylene glycol potentially dangerous I believe; attractive to children and other mammals, as well as being toxic in the marine environment.
 
Non toxic antifreeze is required in solar water heating systems. Presumably in case of any leakage between the water in the panel, and the domestic water.
