I have a bosch starter motor on my MD 2b. It was over hauled a couple of months ago by an auto electrics place. The solenoid had corroded up. So I was a bit fed up today when all I get is a clunk. The gear flies out but that is all.
Checked all connections and it is a new battery.

How can I test it before I take it back?
 
Check all the connections, and make sure they are tight. A loose or slack connection will allow the gear cog flies out, but not a good enough connection to allow the motor to turn over.

Another place to look at is the contact within the starter motor. The first thing to happen is the solenoid will throw out the gear cog, and then make another contact to turn the motor over.

Again, make sure all connections are clean and tight.

I remade the connections and even moved the earth thinking it could not be the starter.

The contact in the starter, where would I find it. Is it an easy one.
 
remove the two screws on the motor cover+ the twosmall bearing cover and check that the brushes move freely in holders if unless you are good at soldering take back and get checked again, (Under warrenty) Thats all I can suggest. Re-reading your post. Take it back and ask for a bench test and if possible to wittness said test.

Your right of course. That is the only sensible thing to do.
 
If you are saying that the gear engages with the ring gear but there is no sign that the motor is trying to turn it sounds as though the contacts in the solenoid are not closing proerly.

A volts reading on the system will soon show if they are closing or not.

Doubly check the battery connections the engine earth connection and the connections on the isolator switch and solenoid. Then take it back!
 
The brushes were stuck in the the holders due to rust on the holders. I managed to break a retaining spring so have to source one of those now.

Presumably a test would be to see if there is a circuit between the body of the motor and the positive terminal on the solenoid.
 
Spare brushes and springs can be obtained from your local LSUK (Lucas) dealer, better to get full set of springs if possible in case some have weakened.
