I've seen a type of slim-line matting on tables before that prevents glasses etc. from slipping.

A quick Google isin't getting me much. Anyone have any experience of what i'm talking about? I don't mean small non-slip mats, but something that could be bought per sq. metre - I can easily cut it to fit the table

This sort of stuff

Dycem_Roll_xlrg.jpg
Called Dycem

Not exactly, no.

The stuff i've seen (could have been online) is like a matted structure with holes. It was low profile like the above picture though. I have a perfect picture of it in my head just hard to describe. It's basically like a non stick table cloth, but with small holes in it

This is pretty close to the look of the stuff i'm looking for:

except in a dark blue/royal blue

That's the stuff!! Thanks Jimmy :D I just need to see if they stock it in bigger quantities. Not sure what size the table is (going to measure it this evening) but at a guess 100cm x 50cm

Be very carefully putting on varnished surfaces as it will damage the surface, I've lost count of the times I have been asked why there are marks in the woodwork when using this non slip matting.

Hi Aquapower - You beat me to it. The only place we would use the perforated stuff is in lockers to stop items rolling around.
Having said that this stuff would be okay if only used occasionally and not left insitu.

The clear rubber alternative also comes as coasters and is a great product - we have used this product on our boat for over a year and no marks are evident - readily available from most chandlers - trust this assists Terry

Try black streak spray, that quickly removed the marks left behind by the matting. Also good for red wine stains on fibreglass.

The stuff you asked about is available in chandlers Force 4 for example £3.95 for a roll 30cm*150 in blue or white. Have seen it in other places in different colours. Last time i searched could not find in any wider than 30cm.

Folks,
Thanks very much for the info - it appears i'm after getting a PHD of info when all I thought i'd get was an essay....

Let me elaborate....
On my cabin table, I often have bottles that may start to drift a little, as the odd person tells a joke and bangs on the table!
The table is the typical high gloss finish (pic below)

If I use the above products, will it get srcatched to heck? Bearing in mind it'll be sitting static

I have come to the realisation that it need not cover the whole table, even just a 30cm line going across will suffice, so the products ive been linked to would actually work fine.

I just don't want to scrape the table to bits if I do indeed put such a product in place

You dont cover the whole table, you just use like place mats during the meal, and as JFM says, dont keep it on there or your table will look like it has acne.
