Non-skid treads on companionway steps

2 x 50mm is perhaps a bit on the generous side, but certainly can't harm. Obviously it's best to have the front strip quite close to the edge of the step, to help a foot not fully planted...BUT, don't put it to the very edge of the tread or it risks being kicked up over time.

As MacD says should be fine. Make sure you clean and prep the surface and degrease properly beforehand. Once fitted I would roll out with a wallpaper type roller to get rid of any air bubbles and then heat gently with a hairdrier to ensure good adhesion. Good luck.

After reading many books on the subject I plan to put two 50mm strips the full length of each step. Is this the right way to go or has some-one got a better idea?

Cheers

Never found that type of self adhesive stuff any good at all, I would definitely recommend Treadmaster that can be bought in two packs, various colours and is cut to shape for steps. It will keep its non slip properties for years without wearing and actually works.

I have taped off 2 25m/m strips on each step after the last coat of varnish, applied varnish to these strips & then sprinkled on anti slip compound from international. this gives non slip & is see through so blends in with the varnish

Some really good advice here - thanks.

If I use the adhesive strip I would have enough to go up the stringers(?) about 2in (50mm) also. Maybe an over-kill?

I used a spare bit of skateboard griptape on my forehatch and it works a treat. It's been out in all weathers for the last three years with no sign of lifting or degradation.

A couple of strips created using masking tape and Interdeck or other non-slip deck paint straight on top of the varnish works really well.
Very durable - I think I've only re-painted them once in 10 years or so.
Kind to bare feet too.
