I want to repaint the non skid areas of my deck by brush/roller rather than spraying. It's currently got Awlgrip on there but the non skid properties have long since worn away/become smooth.

I have heard that a lot of racing boats are moving away from using Awlgrip because the non skid properties don't last and are now using Durepox (?) with an 80 grit additive. Anyone got any experience using it?

Or any comments on Kiwigrip, Protectakote or other alternatives.

What I want is something that is 1/ glossy hence easier to clean 2/ grippy, even with the gloss finish 3/ applicable by roller/brush and 4/ will last a long long time. Does such a paint exist?

Any thought or comments?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Nigel,

Got your PM ok.

First up, high gloss and non slip are not available. to have any grip at all the gloss has to go, replaces by a fine pattern or grit.

Applying non slip coatings in paint has been going on for many years and little or no progress has been made with paint on applications of non slip.

The truth is, to be non slip also means to collect and trap dirt. Your options are:

Repaint non slip areas as required or put up with the dirty looking areas they produce.

Or

Look for alternatives:
Industrial quality non stick patches or strips have to meet safety standards in both grip and adhesion, are simple to apply, last longer than paint and look good because they are available in a wide range of colours and grip materials. They are also easy to replace when required. Most used on racers and some cruisers.

In warmer climates a non slip insulation is required, this available in a number og colours and patterns and is clued to the deck, it is available in a variety of thicknesses and insulation ratings. Most used on cruisers and never on racers due to the extra weight when wet.

Bottom line. I do a lot of maintenance on other peoples boats so you can imagine how much ai like maintaining my own; Perhaps this explains why I have a deck painted with a long chain polymer polyurethane paint and stick on non slip strips as required.

I hope this helps.

Non Skid Paint

Nigel,

I have to recommend an old product I'm afraid!

I have used and applied many specialsit products and "own mixes" over the years and I always come back to International Interdeck.

Reasons are

1. Very easy to apply - roller gives excellent finish
2. Gripping without tearing your knees apart...
3. Whilst its matt in finish it still cleans very easily and well
4. Longer lasting than most and wears evenly.

You can add no-slip additives to any paint - even gloss, but eventually the beads/sand wear through the covering of paint and fall out leaving a pitted paint which then wears quickly.

Blakes/Hempel Deckpaint has a semi-gloss finish but us not compatable with most other paints that are already on the deck.

All of your suggested alternatives work -although some not so easy to get hold of, but my personal experience of Interdeck is very positive.

Hope this helps.

Alan
