Non-sailor buying a radio

So you're more concerned about non-existent terrorists than unlicenced untrained hobbyists blocking channel 16? How would you feel about someone driving on the right? Or blasting a stereo next door at 3am? Or having a shit in your front garden? Or smoking in your restaurant? I don't suppose there's much need for channel 16 in the lake district, but around the coast lives sometimes depend upon it.

Ah yes, the old "if you let them get away with listening to marine radios on land, they'll be driving on the wrong side of the road and defecating in your garden before you know it" argument!

Either I didn't argue my point very well, or your ability to comprehend logical reasoning are severely limited.

I don't care what he said apart from that he wanted to listen to marine band radio,

The simple answer to the OP would have been "first get yourself a boat".

Well. The grape juice seems to have coloured this thread.

He doesn't want a boat. He just wants to listen to radio traffic.

But you don't care.

Heh?

I am sure there are vans, with antennas, milling around looking for this innocent. NOT! The rules seem completely out of touch with such cases. What harm is there? The baddies are well passed this stage, and can be caught by better legislation.

As a fully licenced marine radio operator, surely the answer is to do the one day SRC vhf licence then you are covered if anybody asks.
Its a easy course and you learn what your listening to,.

Think the moment's past...... You might have missed the date of the op ?

It is Easter time no need to crucify him but the thread resurrection is quite entertaining!

Personally I am a fan of the UV5R which is so easily bought for as little as £20. Easily programmed to receive only.
How is anyone going to know you have one? How is anyone going to be interfered with? You do deserve all you get if you publicise what you have heard?

I had an interest in taking up the amateur hobby but found having listened in to the locals decided it wasn't for me.

The UV5R are great little sets and perfectly legal to use by anyone in a life threatening emergency especially if a mobile is out of service range or your expensive dedicated marine set has failed.

I have them for my grand children to operate on the UK PMR frequencies and listen to broadcast FM radio .They are virtually indistinguishable to toy radios as long as the stubby aerial is screwed on tight!

Their radio procedure is better than many obviously unlicensed boat owners who regularily press the PTT on their expensive dedicated marine band sets asking for a radio check without identifying themselves or chatting for hours on channel 16 with their mates about the best fishing marks.
