Non-foam backed headliner

Has anyone seen any headliner backed by something other than foam?

Headliner that isn't backed at all will show all the bumps and undulations and is difficult to fit. Foam backed headliner disintegrates leaving a stick residue and a bunch of toxic dust.

I'm looking at replacing mine. I want simple easy to clean surfaces, but still have a need for some insulation.

A carpet type of liner rather than a vinyl faced one ?

Hawke House offer a couple of self adhesive ones http://www.hawkehouse.co.uk/linings/carpet-linings.html but you should find lots of ( less expensive) alternatives offered to the vehicle finnishing trade.

The problem with carpet is that you can't just wipe it off. It collects dust and other things, and the backing is usually terrible. Not long ago I removed old carpet from the boat, and sill have the task of scraping off all the backing.

I was hoping that there is something made from more modern materials.

I have just replaced all my old foam backed vinyl linings with new

I used double sided self adhesive foam backing (to provide insulation, but more importantly to hide any undulations etc) and then vinyl
Very easy to do and the self adhesive properties meant no contact adhesive

I also tried the self adhesive carpet but it was very difficult in the confines of a small space as it is fairly rigid and can not be stretched or manipulated like the vinyl

Just re-did mine with foam backed vinyl, this last about 20 yrs if done correctly. Mine is stuck to ply panels with waterproof PVA (as per Hawhehouse instructions), so no messy contact adhesive and in 20 years time it'll be easy to replace (by someone else).

My understanding is that the modern foam backed stuff doesn't turn to dust like that used by Westerly in the 60s

My 2000 Westerly had foam backed vinyl which turned to dust.

Are you fixing directly to the deckhead or inner lining, or to boards?
