Non drip mastic

It was a l o n g time ago.
I think you have just been unlucky finding a tube of stuff that slumps. Virtually everything squirted from a tube stays where you put it.
Some sealant/adhesives are targeted just for one job, like just for glass, pvc, panels, wood etc. They are often much more succesfull than one that claims to do all.
Silicons are not great adhering to grp.
A good place to start is a company that specialises in fibreglass and this one has a sealant for grp trims and sealing joints.

Using it effectively would be like doing the joints in wooden decking by placing a non stick strip in the bottom of the groove so the sealant only sticks to opposite sides.
If it sticks to the bottom of the groove then it will come away on one side as you should not seal into a right angle without a non stick break seperating the two planes.
For your job you just want it to bridge the gap rather than fill it up as that will increase the likely hood of one side eventually becoming unstuck .
In a perfect world you would want to achieve something like my diagram...
If possible try and sand the surfaces to be bonded to remove any dirt by slipping a folded piece of sandpaper in the gap.
