Non boaty rant of the day

Seven year old son gets some software for Christmas, you know the sort 'Art Attack', 'Reader Rabbit Maths' etc. He's all excited, load it onto my Windows XP PC and none of it works. Check the box and the latest version of Windows that it's compatible with is Windows 98. Jeez that's nearly FIVE years ago.

Have tried running under XP using the Compatability wizards with no joy. Phoned the help desks and the buggers aren't back to the new year.

Anyone got any ideas? The best I can think of is creating a partition on my hard drive running Windows 98 but to do that I will have to backup all my data and reformat. AAAAARRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHH.

Had the same problem with windows 200

Microsoft only support products back 3 versions

thus windows 98 and 95 are now more than 3 versions old and older programs do not always work on xo or 2000

You could check out:

It will create multiple partitions on the fly, saves having to start afresh should you decide to multiple boot.

OK....time for the gloves to come off.....Whos the mean bugger that gave hinm the offending software in the first place......probably bought it cheap on eBay (Byron was getting rid of a load of old tat , wasnt he?). Play the doting Dad and make em come over all embarassed by pointing out really old software wheras you keep son up to date with really state of the art compooter etc etc....and would they be kind enough to return it to shop for full refund and give him the money instead?
This they will happily do cos theyd rather you didnt find out just wot skinflints they are and, cos they'll be super embarassed about whole affair they will give him cheque/money order/cash for somewhat more than their original expenditure.....maybe even enough for you to be able to afford Partition Magic (and very good it is too........)

Warned loads of parents off some of these presents before Christmas

One of the worst offenders is Lego! Still selling stuff that's Win98, and no apparent intention of bringing out support for later operating systems. It's expensive enough that's it's likely to be prime present for some kids (like the film studio) who then can't use the thing, and can't upgrade it!

Sorry petem but XP uses NTFS by default and you will need to get a newish Partition magic to format another partition AND then make them both primaries so EITHER can be C: 'cause Win98 will only boot from C:

alternatively install a second hard drive

but in either case you will need some form of boot manager so you can select which operating system to use.

XP's DOS/Win3x/Win9x support is allegedly rubbish, according to my computer guru, so I've stayed well away from it. Also, allegedly, some large corporates will not allow it on their Lans due to its copyright conditions.

Do you have a CD drive that is bootable and are you going somewhere on 11/1 ??
