Depends on your style, but consider the George V? Otherwise, a little more modest, try the Hotel Regents Garden in Rue Pierre Demours. It's a Best Western and has a lovely garden - if you have a room on the garden side you can hear the birds singing and no traffic noise but nearby parking is excellent /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

All of the rooms are nice there. It was a house built by Louis XV for his personal physician. Walking distance of metro as well.

There are some really nice restaurants in Avenue des Ternes, right by rue Pierre Demours - try some of the fish/shellfish restaurants. Then a walk or taxi down the Champs Elysees, Concord and then the Louvre. She won't have time for any shopping if you play your cards right /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif But I'm no expert on shopping - maybe someone else will help.

Blimey it would need to be near a Metro right out there. Try the Hotel Clement, rue Clement in St Germain des pres . Your wife will be able to fall into the shops...

Absolutely the area to be. Walking distance of Eiffel Tower, Notre Dame, the Louvre, and all the design houses' workshops with the shops offering last season's designs for peanuts. Great night life and eating.

Paris trip

go via plane to CDG or eurostar to gare du nord or drive via le shuttle.

Book Royal St Michel hotel 3*** right in the middle of paris on the south bank and in the middle of the action.

Consider Hotel Notre Dame on opp side of the same block and book room 52 with view of Notre Dame 200 yards ahead.

Immediately upon arrival dump gear and go to (prebooked) restaurant for lunch at Jules Verne halfway up eiffel tower - get a cab for this, only five quid tops. JV not cheap but worth it. After this, the whole weekend is a total winner.

Praps kip in the hotel, depending on how much you overdid lunch. Or ,linger at le depart, the 24hourr caff just along the street from the hotel, and at the start of the pilgrims rooute to santiago di compostella.

Next morning do brekki, notre dame, then Ste Chapelle is a MUST DO all on the island a short walk over the bridge on the isle de la cite. then get a train or cab up to the arc de triompihe is quiter good view, perhaps shopping wander down rue Faubourg, and then zip on fast RER underground to Gare de Lyon for lunch at the Train Bleue - a national histoic monument for all the frescos inside.

Um, louvre is worth a trip if you go to the entrance on rue rivoli, not via the Pyramid. If you fake a limp they will give you a nice ride in the lift on the way out :)

Sunday they have a nice bird/flower market near notre dame, poss nip up to montmartre - but lunch at Brasserie Lipp - book early and ensure you get a table in the back, on the ground floor.

that should do, i reckon :)

Welcome as a 'new user', Phil. Only someone used to walking the Lake District would think the Champ de Mars and Notre Dame were within easy walking distance!

Re: Paris trip

agreed. Staying nearby means you can go more than once. Hint: i once arrived a bit late - you can blag your way in by shouting that the kids are still inside. Ste chapelle is the reason why paris is beter than anyother city and why when/if they win the olympics, i'll say, well, fair enough...

Re: Paris trip

Paris is so easy to get around on the Metro that you can stay anywhere. When I go there I stay at the Hotel du Square D'Anvers. 6 Place d'Anvers 75009 Paris
0033 42 81 20 74 Fax 0033 48 78 47 45. Rooms are small but clean and more to the point it's quiet, which many in the centre are not. Very reasonable prices.
