Non Boaty. Looking for wheelchair lift motor.

This is totally non-boaty but someone might be able to help.

I have a very nice neighbour who is completely paralysed from the waist down and she used to drive a Toyota Corolla by using a mechanism that would lift her wheelchair, after she had slipped into the driver’s seat and folded her chair, onto the roof of her car and in under a cover.

Unfortunately the motor “has gone to God” after many repairs. We’ve got local mechanics to improvise with windscreen wiper motors but these are not strong enough and fail after a few weeks.

We’ve contacted the original manufacturer of the lift in Israel but they don’t make them any more. We’ve contacted other wheelchair lift manufacturers but they don’t seem to be interested in supplying just a motor, only in supplying the complete system which she cannot afford.

Would anyone know of some firm who sell strong 12 volt motors that would be up to the job?
 
not really help, so please don't threaten me.

If you are a fan of robot wars, they always seem to be using wheelchair motors to power the bots. So someone somewhere has access to these things.

That is it, don't know any more, that's all that popped into my head, nothing more to tell. Sorry.
 
A small starter motor seems the obvious starting point (no pun intended). The only thing they don't like is running under little load or too fast, so a nice heavy wheel chair and a good gear train should keep it happy, I'd have thought.
 
I'm no engineer at all but would a 12v electric winch motor ( the type used on the front of 4x4'sfor pulling vehicles out of ditches) do the job?
 
Do a search online for a motor supplier / motor rewind company near you and take them the old one. Any worth there salt should be able to source your exact requirements. Have you considered having the existing rewound / rebuilt ?

I think Riggy has got it. A 12 v. Land Rover winch should be able to be adapted to do the job. We'd got the existing motors re-wound but they always burnt out again so starter motors and wiper motors weren't up to the job.

Many heads are better than one.

That's a brill list Phil. We'll certainly ring them all; thanks for the contact names. Makes it easier.

I don't think I'll be over in The Haven this year. (I've moved the boat back from Cork to Kilrush.) Although you never know; the "Tall Ships" will be in Waterford in June and I hope to tie up with a couple of forumites and go there.

What about whizzing over yourself in June? Its only a short trip over from Pembrokeshire, (Little England) and if you give me enough warning, I'd say I could get a mooring put down for you in the River Barrow.

Have you considered having the existing motor re-wound. there are quite a few companies that specialise in this, and you would ensure that the motor was the correct one for the job!

Waterford Tall Ships race eh, good idea /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif - it's not that often we witness such spectacle in our waters, so can't be missed.
I would be interested in meeting up, who else is going?
If Waterford is full we can always follow Barrow up to New Ross. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

Tall Ships Race 2005 starts from Waterford Sat July 9th.
100 odd tall ships sailing down the River Suir and out past The Hook will be some sight /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif.
