Well, the smoking ban in working places and pubs came into effect yesterday and the Health Minister, Michael Martin, has gone from pariah to a god in 24 hours.
Was in 2 pubs last night, both of which were mainly frequented by smokers. Not one person attempted to light up. Ashtrays have vanished and the breathing atmosphere was amazing. Asking smokers what they thought of the ban, "Well, its a good thing really" and "I don't mind, I can go outside for a puff if I want" "I'm going to use the opportunity to try and give them up."
Not one person complained, after all the dire warnings that smokers in pubs wouldn't put out their cigarettes. Everyone seemed for it, although, 24 hours earlier, everyone was saying it was unworkable and Michael Martin's name was mud!
If it has started out this well, its going to continue.
