A few weeks ago we bought a tablet computer for SWMBO to use. I have been getting used to it ( or at least trying to!) but she herself has not yet used it.

I was using it to check on the forums this morning. Put it on the coffee table to move something out of SWMBO's way.

5 minutes later it seems to have died.

I assumed it had put itself to sleep, or whatever it does when not used for a few minutes, and expected it to wake up as soon as i tried to carry on with what I was doing.
touched the screen... nothing. Pressed the "windows button" .....nothing. Tried the power on button... nothing

Assumed its battery had run flat, although I'd not seen any low battery warning, so put it on charge expecting to be able to resume play almost straight away....... No!

Now fully charged after about 3 hours or so. Still no go!

Am I missing something or is it a dud ?

It a Dell, BTW

Hi-
What Tablet? My Motorola Xoom needs a longer press, 5 secs, to do a 'hard' turn on/off after the battery has gone flat.
your tablet may have a small hole to take a paper clip to do a hard reset-

It come to life again

Maybe, just maybe, I held the power button down for a little longer than normal

.... Just in time she will be back home from a shopping trip within the next few minutes.

The power of the forum is indeed formidable.

As suggested, a short press of the "power button" just puts it to sleep and wakes it up again. A long press turns it off completely or back on again. If the battery goes completely flat, it will switch itself off and need the long button press. If you don't expect to use it for a significant time, it makes sense to switch it off completely - it will hold its battery charge a lot longer.
