John Humphrys recently opened the Bedford park Festival, here in sunny, rude, London. He told a story, thus:
During the last General Election campaign, he did a live Today interview with Blair. TB was "on the hustings" and had to be interviewed from the London studio. So - TB is on a phone somewhere in the UK. Alistair Cambell decides that the only way he could monitor the interview is to be in the Today studio with JH. He sits in the corner wearing headphones for the whole interview.
JH gives TB his usual rough ride, and at the end of the interview signs off and hands on to another item.
AC stands up, throws down his headphones and storms out of the studio with one word leaving his lips: "W*nk*r!"
JH rounds this off when telling it : "To this day, I've never found out whether he meant me or Blair."
