We took home PC into PC World last week to get "Remastered". Ie, wipe off the kids' crappo internet downloads, reinstall Windows, thus eliminating lots of boot up probs etc. All went fine, it now works like new, hurrah. No G. Glitter jokes please.

But now when I press the " key I get @, and when I press the @ key I get ". Is there some way to fix this? My keyboard is UK not continental, and all the commas etc work correctly, it is only the " and @ that seems to have reversed their functions. Any quick fix to this?

You should have posted this in the website forum, for that you have just received a slapped wrist.
However... PCW have left your PC set up for the US Market.
Do this...
my computer/control panel/keyboard/keyboard/language
ensure it is set to "english (british)" - lo and behold /forums/images/icons/laugh.gif

Thanks Byron. That worked up to a point, then it asked me to insert the Windows CD so it could copy the UK configuration off it (only US was loaded). Then for some reason it couldn't copy the file. @Error copying file@ message appeared. So back to PCW saturday I spose.

Sorry about forum. I thort wd get faster reply here, and was right :). Off to bed now

You now understand why we don't use PC World! aside from the G Glitter prob!
Windoze will generally look for the system disk when it tries to find system files and if I remember correctly will need the same serial as it was loaded from.
So you'll now have to go back to PC World kick them and get them to do it properly!

Kettles and pots?

Seem to see that you have been running duplicate postings on non-boaty stuff here and on Website News of late Byron? Not keen on duplicate posts as a rule and I guess if we encouraged all geeky-type traffic across to WN (or another forum there if people would like that) then it would better? Just a mild observation.../forums/images/icons/smile.gif

If its windows 98 then I've got the disk...

So you unscrew this, and put it safely here, then oopps...

Long winded way of doing it...

When it is searching for the file, write down the name of what it is looking for...
Then when it doesn't find it go into windows as normal
Open Windows explorer and search on the cd drive (with windows disk in it!) for the file name you wrote down
make the keyboard change as before
when you restart and it tries to look for the file, select browse and take it to the place where the file was located...

From memory, i think it needs a few files, so it may have to be repeated...

Sounds long winded and so on, but it should only take about 10 - 15 minutes... and saves the grief of going to PCW again...

Cheers,

Craig.

It is there, go through the same routine as I told you, then click ADD you will then be presented with a list of languages, scroll down until you find eng (british) add it and don't forget to remove the US one afterwards.

Re: Kettles and pots?

Aaaaw! c'mon Kim. Allow me a little latitude, when I do a cross posting it is of general interest and useful to all. You are the dude with the figures but I suspect not enough people check the website forum to pick up on say my posting on where to find Acronyms. A subject which raises its head very regularly.
AND If the PC had come out 40/50 years ago I would be a card carrying member of the Geek Brigade.
AND If you ain't careful I shall report you to the Race Relations people for picking on me because I am half Greek.

Byron I did that. At first, it offered me only English US. So I clicked "Add". Then it offered me every language ever. So I selected English British. When I clicked OK, it asked for the Win98 CD. So I put it in. This was the original disc I got with the puter, (though PCW may have re-mastered it using their own disc, dang). Then it said it couldn't copy the English British file.......

Only thing you can do then is to try re-installing Windows over the PCW copy. This may not however work because their copy might reject it.
You can also take earlier advice and see if you can pluck the required object from the CD then load it on.
