Hi All,
We've just bought a new tohatusu 3.5hp 4 stroke and it sounds rattly all over, knocking, banging (not just valves) like a bag of spanners falling down the stairs (although starts and runs well)
Is this normal?
Thought a new engine would sound smoother and worried it might have been run without oil in the workshop or something.
Thanks,
Selina

Very funny!
I am serious you know!
Are they all noisy or could there be something wrong with this one?
It has replaced a three year old Honda 5hp 4 stroke and is much noisier than that!

I've got the Mariner badged version and it certainly is not smooth. Sounds marginally better than our Honda 2.3 but much smoother than a Seagull /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
If I didn't know any different I'd think it was an overheating rattle. However, the cooling water tell-tale has a strong flow.

It also keeps cutting out at low revs /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

I have a new Mercury 3.3 (but 2 stoke) and it is reasonably quiet.
When looking for a new OB in the 3.3 to 5 hp range I was told that the new small 4 strokes are not much quieter (and indeed sometimes a bit noisier) than same sized 2 stroker.

This was from various suppliers of different engines, they all said the same. It is not until you get to the 10hp plus sizes that you get the real difference.

Luckily this is not in EU so could get a new 2 stroke.
